fantastic collabo here.. there's a lot to take in so I'm gonna come back after I download the new version..

first thought - it's great!

second thought - love ---------------> I said love the mellow break at the end!

third thought - the vocals and guits are totally sweet..

4th thought until after dinner - the drums totally suck!

I'll be back with a more detailed thought after I download the new version, and order a pizza..

and then eat it.. and roll one..

great song!

Timing issues on the vocal?

I'll take this one Khompy.

Paul, I recorded the vocals over a wave file with the fade-in already in place for the intro. In order to try and line it up to measure bars in Sonar, I had to cut some of the fade-in, thinking I'd be mixing my own vocal and sending him the whole track for evaluation. Then he sent me a new wave with a few minor changes. But it was lined up a little differently. I tried to re-align the vocal tracks as best I could before sending him the 8 tracks, but there are still some glitches. The song isn't for sale or anything, so I didn't make a big stink about it. The idea is there and the lessons are learned. Good catch though! Cheers.

Tom

And while I'm here, thanks to everyone (well almost everyone) for the constructive feedback. Glad to see there is some thought going into the reviews.

Back to you, Khompy...

Very Nice Collab here fellas!!

This was a great team up too btw. The linear song writing is something that both of you guys do well. This has kind of a long sustained angst to it that sounds damn fine. I enjoyed this alot!

I hear an additional harmony in the "leave this cold city" line that might pull it a little further off of the root.... ...totally preference, pointless, and thinking out loud.

Smokin performances by all involved..... ...and analyticalman.... ...very nice ending indeed!!

btw: Nice use of big verb in this tune!....sweeeeet!

yeah I really like this.. the vocals sound really loud on this second mix.. obviously I'm a bad judge of these things but they sound very loud to me in a few parts.. great vocal performance.. nice guitar tones.. I definitely like the first mix better even though the vocals sound a bit loud on that one too in a few parts.. I don't understand the deal with the drums.. it's like a few snare hits every now and then in the chorus? it's really the only thing I don't like about this, but I didn't like it a lot because of how great everything else is.. maybe I was just waiting for a drum beat..

the more I listen to it the less it bothers me.. all I can say is I listened to it about 12 times since last night.. I'd like another collab immediately by you guys, but this time let Tom or A Man do the drums.. I didn't notice or hear any timing things with the vocals.. good sound to the tune as a whole.. definitely a serious collab.. I love the whole outro turn of events.. 3:45 was the sweetest spot in the whole song for me.. and how often do I use the L word in a post? :D "I wish for someone to tell me" - I wanted more of what was hitting on that exact line.. the chant vocals are inspiring.. and the sound of them is great. I'm trying to get a chant thing going on but it sounds bloody horrible compared to this.. you 3 should do another.. that's it, nice job.. a great song came out of it.

Great work! Really powerfull tune and performances.

I think Sam is correct about the vox. I guess they just sounded a bit out of the mix to me. But performance wise, great.

Lots of tension in this song.

Wish I was half as creative as this (even 1/3 rd :D ).

Cheers fellas!

Keep it up!

dobro says: exactly, amen, bingo.

yeah!!!

Um heavy and stuff... loud... drums take over the job of beating the heart...

Tom's voice right in the center of my brain...

Are you boosting highs on those keyboard drums? There's some high-end fuzziness on 'em.

The dry, dry, dry production on the lead vocal is refreshing for one of Tom's (then of course, you do the semi ripped-speaker FX...)

This creates that pleasurable uncomfort...

Agree w/Sabbath about the need for a big loud snare drum in places.

A sensitive waste... great harmonies after the melodic guitar break... nice monk-voices .... ohhhh ohhh. ohhh ohhh...

A sweet grind to remember (over and over)

.. ok now based on the last two i've posted a mix with the vox just boosted 1db in 2.5k. That should be the middle ground between the muddies and the brights. "Aye droog a little bit of the old ultra 'V'?"

Thanks to everyone who has offered feedback so far. I really appreciate the detailed listens were getting, I mean we tried to pack the song full of subtleties and it's good that they're not falling by the wayside.

If you have a problem with the drummer blame it on me, i told him all i was going to give him was some toms, a kick, and a snare. I said that's it dude, think "toad the sprocket". Needless to say, he wasn't happy.

I'm sure we'll all be working again together in the future, just gotta take some time to develop a new idea that seems worthwhile.

Viddy well brotha. Viddy well...

Hey can you post the new wave for me when you have time? Thanks.

Okay, I've read this entire thread, but the part about me reading any of this thread is a total lie, so lemme' give a completely undadultered opinion.

Fan-fucking-Tastic job on a mix that HAS to be a mother-scratcher. I'm obsessed with low mids right now, and they're about as rock solid as any commercial industrial tune I've ever heard...either of them. :D

I caught a little bit of actual clip in the ears in 2 spots...very transitory, and probably only noticeable because of the incredibly loud volume at which I was able to play this without it falling apart or turning shrill.

I fucking hate everybody involved in this forever.

Nice work.

Oh...non-mixwise, there are a couple of places where you can just FEEL that a wall of guitars is about to slam you in the face...It's one of those totally artistic choices that may or may not have been intentional; regardless, it's kinda' cool in its unpredictability, but walls with guitars all over them could be fun too.

Oh, and lay off the fucking autotune, Tom, lol.

On repeated spins, something about that area between about 1:30 and the 2 minute mark is bugging me in some spots...like a sync issue...I mean, there aren't drums there, lol...but that repeating synth part is out of sync with the vocal in a way that reminds me of the way my mixes lose all their groove when I add drums after the rest of the mix is recorded. It's not something I can point to and go...THAT syllable is behind the beat or anything...it's more like a groove issue; the vocal and the synth part aren't working together right there for some reason. The reason could very well be totally in my head, mind you, but I appreciate it when people point stuff like that out, b/c I usually can't hear "groove issues, " lol.

Well a few things I guess I can clarify. First those aren't synths. That's guitar.

The timing things I think were already explained, we had some track synching issues with the file transfers. I tried to make microsecond adjustments to get everything to line up. But one thing i noticed as I worked this over and over was that it worked for me behind the beat, pulling the beat, right on the beat so I may have gone full spectrum when it came to timing.

Hehe (I'm back only to dissapear probably). Great stuff guys. Not really a fan of this kinda music but it works. The Miracle ---> America merge is very clever too ;)

Cool tune guys... very dark and brooding....

I definitely got a David Bowie feel to the backup/harmonizing vocals (leave this cold city)

Some drums would sound good. it definitely needs some drums...

And I can see some more guitar, course I can always see more guitar, cant have too much guitar I always say....
Guitar is good...:p

I would of ended it at 4:17 instead of going back into the heavy part again, although I like the "ghost" ending...

Killer vocals as usually, and of course the lyrics are classic SLuiCe...

Excellent job guys... Very nice indeed....

You're more likely to hear me sing a Celine Dion song in Dutch than to start using AT. :)

I liked the song. Very Pink Floydish. I like progressive stuff with changes. Old school Rush fan. Cool lyrics. Could be part of a conceptual album. Not much to complain about in he mix dept. Very well done on monitors and cans.....
Great collab.

hey Tom, you know your my boy and all, but I seem to remember you posting a song that had some AT in it.. It was awhile ago, but I remember all your experiments..

start singing! I think her song from Titanic will do..

:D

Actually, that wasn't AT as I recall saying at the time. I remember the thread. I had manually adjusted a horrible note using the pitch shifter in Wavelab that I couldn't hit at the time. It sounded worse afterwards and I'll never do it again. But I was trying to get the recording right and that note was just aweful. Fortunately I can hit it now. No offense taken but, "my boy" read that quote again and let's be accurate about things, eh? :)

If you want, we'll have Khompy post the vocals completely naked on this. And if you guys tell me where the AT is I'll eat my microphone and you'll never have to hear my flat voice again.

Cheers.

'my boy' is something we say here that means the same thing as - my man, my homey, my friend etc..

and no, I didn't think you were using auto tune here..

Sorry Sam. Didn't mean to sound snippy. I was trying to be funny too. But although I used a pitch shifter in that tune quite a while back, you know my take on it. It's one of the most unnatural sounding things I've heard. I'd honestly rather hear a flat note that sounds like a human.
