A friend of mine (used to live here, now he's in LA) is a musical genius. Seriously.

These songs were recorded entirely with TOYS. Toy cell phones, toy drums, toy guitars, childrens toys of all types! This should let us know that having the best drum kit/the best guitar rig isn't the most important part of a song...it's the song itself, and it's who is behind the instruments.

He played all of the parts, all on childrens' toys. No shit here!

I saw the little CB drum kit that didn't even come up to my knees mic'd up at his old house here...I can vouch that it's totally legit (although he did use 2 U87's as room mics...if that gives you an idea of the magnitude of his studio!)

One of these tunes is a Doobie Brothers cover...I'm sure everyone will get a kick out of it!

Check them out...

Genius, I tell you, genius.

Oh my god!

He's like Trent Reznor on Ecstacy and happy pills!

He is sort of a genius, isn't he?

Bob Dylan . . . John Lennon . . . Roger Waters . . . Peter Gabriel . . .

and this guy.

Tell me that you see it...it's brilliant! And there's so much more where that came from! He did an entire record with toys. His last record was on Dreamworks...and Dreamworks didn't pick up the toy album, so a local indie did, and it ROCKED!

This record BLEW UP in Japan...(no cliche pun intented...it really did!)

I am amazed by his talent.

What is this guys name?Where can I find more of him and his music?

Uno Song---Yeah man! Great little pop tune-I had to laugh out loud a few times hearing the instruments in the background. But it definetely worked-the melody and arrangement are so good-he could have done this a-capella and it would sound great. This reminds me of Macle's tunes ALOT!(isn't he an L.A. guy?). Thanks for posting this..

nice. what blows me away is that the tunes come across with some serious conviction and not like tunes recorded with toys.

Damn....
....I listened to the doobie's cover..... .......damn. I wish i could get a snare sound that big. Great stuff Darth. g

those are some pretty amazing tracks..........the drums were all done w/ toys? where can i get some toys like that?

Amazing! I'm blown away. This guy deserves world recognition. Thanks so much for sharing. :D

Pretty cool. :)

The drum sound is better than 95% of what I've heard on this BBS.

I saw a band on one of the late night shows a few years back do the same thing. They all played toy instuments - plastic sax, nylon sting cowboy guitar, etc. They were great, and so is this guy.

What did he use for a bass? Pretty tough to get a toy bass that actually has some bottom to it.

Thanks for sharing this.

Hey guys...his name is Matt Mahaffey...and his band is called Self. They have a full band with 3 records out...but he plays most of the instruments on the records.

The all-toy album is called "gizmodgery". It's incredible...go and get it!

Kramer...

That guitar part that she says sounds like queen...funny story about that.

I heard that song in his control room before he had lyrics to it or anything. Then I heard the final mix, and that guitar lead. I looked at him and said, "you didn't play that part, did you?" I spoke too soon to think that he might take offense to it. He looked at me, smiled, and said "no, my brother played that part." His brother is in the band, and tours with them also. Pretty funny. It really does sound like a queen solo, though!

Great article, man. It's right on!
