A Mixing Console

What are you using now, a Mackie???

Do you have a commercial studio?

Do you really need the full automation (sure we all would love to have total recall) because, that's not included in the base price (15K). If not, I'd get a Soundcraft Ghost (it is a "real" step above a Mackie), 32 channels with MIDI Mute Automation (I have one), save ~7K and get other toys.

Well I'm certainly not rich... And my studio gear doesn't help the situation.

Nope... Don't have a commercial studio... At least not at this point. In a few years, I really would love to move my studio to a commercial facility that some studio moved-out of, but I'll be lucky to have enough success with the studio to justify it, within 10 years!

Yep. Using a Mackie now... It's been about 2.5 years since I've been stuck with it. I had an MTA 924 before, but I sold it and bought the Mackie as a temporary console, so that I could put out a down-payment on a custom console.

Before I bought the 924, I went through a few different used consoles. I'd sink money into having something fixed, only to find something else not working right the next week. Tired of the not being about to depend on my console, I was looking to spend enough money on a console I knew I'd have for at least the next 10 years.

The Soundcraft Ghost is the next step up from Mackie. Unfortunately, the step is not too much more than a step focused on features. The Ghost is not a large enough step in signal integrity for me to justify double the price of a Mackie.

I had even considered buying another used "classic" something or other and having Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades mod EVERYTHING and essentially giving me a brand new console for about $12k.

Before getting a chance to look into that, I found a demo 924 amd went with that, but had I been able to buy a brand new Neotek Elan II like you can now, I very well may have possibly gone for that.

But, my custom console is already about 2.5 years in the works and all but 3 features from my all-time ultimate console wishlist has become a reality. One of them is moving-fader automation, but one can spend on that as much as I spent on my console.

I'd be more than happy with only MIDI mute automation though... If only someone would come-up with a Console Retrofit MIDI Mute Automation System...

custom console, eh? i should like to see pics of that once you get past the wiping drool off your chin phase, Recording Engineer..!
when is its due date? have a name picked out yet?

Yep, I will sure be posting some good pics of it once it's here and installed... May even post a pic of the final prototype channel strip panel without the electronics, once the final channel strip prototype is made; a couple different ones have already been made and we decided to do a major revision each time.

The due date keeps on changing. This is because it was agreed that it would be a "as we get the chance" deal; largely due to my funding. The current most up to date ETA is Fall 2004. If we can get the design stage finished this month (The cabinet design is the only thing left, but we've been at the same point for a couple months now.), then hopefully the building phase can start sometime in January. Once things get started though, things will go slowly, but steadily. I know it'll take about a week per channel, so that's 6 months for the 24 channels alone.

But if they do start in January, Fall 2004 may actually be feasible. Otherwise, it'll be Spring 2005; as they'll be driving it from South Carolina to California and they don't want to drive cross-country during the Winter.

It's officially been named: Westhaynestein

$30.000 for 24 channels ain't that bad. Expensive stuff, top of the range consoles....

Not really... Considering AMEK no longer manufactures the RECALL by Langley. So, you're talking about the used market there and I'm specifically talking stirctly about the new console market on purpose; due to being sick and tired of the used console market game.

Now, if anything, we could talk about used consoles with a very nice basic design for it to be worth-while to look into possibly using it as a base for an entire console mod & clean-up; effectively making the console brand new with every Channel, Sub, and the Master Section hot rodded.

I wouldn't consider the AMEK RECALL by Langley for something like that either though.

Just my humble opinion...

i was just messin with ya man! i just got that thing a few days ago and i am pretty stoked about it still.

So that's yours? That explains it.

Congrats man! You should be stoked about it! I hope it keeps-on giving sweet recordings for years to come.

how are you liking that HD24? are you using the onboard converters?

I love my HD24... It works great for what I'm doing... Mixing on an analog console, like I'm sure you will be doing with your new AMEK RECALL by Langley.

Yep, using the onboard converters... One of the nicest onboard converter sets I've ever heard! Can't beat the HD24 for the price in my opinion!

Yeah, it'd sure be even better if you could hook-up a monitor and mouse up to it for quick and simply easy edit and a firewire hookup for an external DVD-R Recorder that you could burn songs to and load songs onto one of the drives from. Or at least made it all an added option for extra money. But you're not get all that for the money anyway... What you want for $2k? I mean it sounds pretty darn nice, and that's worth the $2k alone for a digital 24-bit 24-track recorder! I suppose if someone wanted all that I wish the HD24 had, they'd be purchasing a RADAR II, which certainly isn't even close to the $2k price range of the HD24!

Anyhow, eventually I REALLY would like to get a nice 2-ch. A/D for my mixes going to the computer and I might as well use it on 2 tracks while tracking and overdubs too. I'll be buying the Lucid or Mytek for the application. If ever have an extra $1k to spare... Have other places my money is going in the studio right now and my LynxOne card is doing just fine for now.

Hehe, I remember when we got our first professionel large console in the studio....we had to hire a van just to get it to the studio. it weights about 160 KG and we had to lift in into the studio with only two guys (and I'm fairly small) I would rather die right there on the floor than dropping the console. We even had to break down the fence in the backyard because we couldn't get the console in through the main entrance of the studio. Haha talk about a safety procedure...this console will not be easy to steal...

ahhh....but it's the same with every purchase....happy like a little kid. And money these days is only a number on your bankaccount.....everytime I buy something that amount just keeps growing (still trying to figure out what that - sign in front of the number means ?)

The Guitar Center that just opened up in Union Square in Manhattan had a vintage 32 channel Trident board for 65G's on display.....

mmmmmm.... :D

Plus the RECALL was/is a Live board to me. The dynamics and eq have a definite different feel.

Barely liked it live specially when you needed to do something really quick. Press utton wait press button wait again then work. LOL

Bryan Giles

I Should qualify. Every time I was in front of a recall it was on a gig. Never in the studio.

yeah, i know it is a "live" board. it has been working great as a studio piece though. it is not often you run across a $140,000 board for the price that i bought it for. (which i will not disclose unless you guys pry it out of me :) ). i was hesitant at first due to the fact that it was a "live" console, but once i tried it, i really liked it. the only thing that has really annoyed me is that you plug the talkback mic into the top of the board. would have been nice if it were in the back instead. this works for live, but not in the studio. :)

Cool. Glad it is working. How does the eq feel for you?
and Gun to the head. How much you steal it for? 30K?

Bryan Giles

i will admit, the eq is kinda funky. but the more i use it, the more i like it. to be honest, just the slightest adjustment does alot. this is not what i was used to on my mackie. the biggest thing for me is that it sends a really clean signal to tape. although it is a live console, it has direct outs on every channel and tape returns as well. 30 to 40,000 is what they are going for. i stole mine for $12,000. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. ;)

that is really only if you are using the automation and stuff. even then, it isnt that bad. you can bypass all the automation and recall and just use it as an analog board.
