we don't need rest!!
Here is another quickie I did this morning on a Roland keyboard workstation and my new banjo (and a snippit of strat for good behavior;)). I mic'd the banjo this time with a Beyer m160 and tried to sit still while recording. The strat is thru a J-station.

The main concern with this track is that my control room speaker wiring/switch is crapping out somewhere...so rather than track down the problem, I did the entire project on my Sony MDR7506 phones. So...the reverb, effects, levels, etc might be kinda wacky. But, I want to think I am starting to get used to "interpreting" things with the Sonys...whether it is the "right" thing to do or not when "mixing."

I'd appreciate a listen to this and some blunt observations from anyone if they feel so inclined.

thanks in advance.

Well this is by far the "biggest" banjo sound you've achieved so far. By far. How many mics on it? I also like this version (if I can call this a version of what you've done before) better than the rest. Kind of a funky version.

I liked the bass too. A techno sound, which I usually DON'T like. What is it?

Still not sure if I like the mix of the lead guits and the banjo. That's gonna take a couple of listens I think.

Liked the "falling off the table" ending.

Kind of a long decay on the banjo reverb? I'll bet you love it. It's a bit "big" for me.

damn mix, I bet you had stuff running down yo leg while tracking this. this ditty is just what I'd like to be trying. damn bluegrass licks keep getting in the way. he he he he. so I hear a mandolin making it's way into the mix. you got a mando? and is the banjo in standard tune?

keep tracking this kinda stuff.

MMM ..one mic on the banjo...the beyer m160. The bass is the Roland xp80 keyboard...

and..actually the delay on the banjo is a repeat echo and not a reverb....and yes...I suppose kinda lengthy!!! ha!!

dtb...yeah...actually I do have a mando.. an old pre war A style Gibson I inherited from my grandfather. I need to replace the plastic pegs on the tuners, and I bought some at Gruhns last time I was there, but just haven't gotten around to doing that. I even have NEW strings ready to go when I get the gumption!

and yes..the banjo is in standard tuning ...DBGDG. I really need to get a 5th string capo (I'd like to play with one first before I "pound in" spikes or screw a sliding one onto the neck to see which I'd prefer). Maybe a mando with whammy:eek: However, mandos 'seem' so small in my hands. I guess its something you get used to.

This is one of the main reasons I'm hanging around this group. I liked your "banjo ditty" and thought I'd be disappointed with the new "sans banjo" version - but it's awesome! And this is such a cool blend of tradition and non-tradition - not an easy act to pull off. The strat sure keeps things honest! Well done. Nice keyboard stuff - I'm jealous.

Is the Beyer a large or small diaphragm?

MC (I like banjos!)

Neither. It's a ribbon mic...

And you're from Germany?? :D (where Beyer is located? :D) ;)

Cool groove man. Some really cool music in this one.

The mix could use a bit more bottem end IMO.

That banjo sounds really nice. I'll try and dig up some other banjo tunes some time soon so I have something with which to compare these new banjo tunes of yours. But it sounds good to me.

Cool strat work too. I liked the music a lot. The banjo sounds like it's getting tighter too.

it sounds pretty nice.......very interesting rhythm bed for a banjo to lay in........

i'd almost like to hear the banjo a little more dry effects wise, but you've definitely got a start here........nice guitar playing too

The bass is the Roland xp80

You said "blunt observations " eh?:) . This is a headphone mix? Damn I hate you even more LOL! Banjo sounds good to me..maybe a hair to out front..maybe not. Plug in a real bass...damnit!:D , only real nitpick I have about this sonic wise. Even the strat thru the J-station with that far away sound was good sounding to me. Your banjo pickin is comming along pretty damn good..

I got a request; check yer pm in a bit!

Hm... :(

No, this doesn't cut it. Not at all... jeez.. you've embarrassed yourself again, haven't you? :o :(

(there... back on your shit list, for sure :D  )

Cleaner than a nun's ...well... shoe, I guess... Nice, use of angry, aggressive tones... kinda puts the banjo in a different role.

Sweet gtr licks.... these drums you have... sound better than in the past. Whattya do... break down and learn ACID or soethin?

Beautiful tensions there in the opening... the almost "open string arpeggiated guitar chord" sound... w/that banjo on bass... good rolls on the jazz organ... though it's muffled maybe too much??

The electronic percussion really blends well with what *sounds* like a traditional hi-hat/cymbal/snare combo.

Hopefully back off the shit list... for now :) This thing was pretty good... even after I looped it for a half-hour... LIKE HARRIS says he does   :(

;) uh oh :D permanent stay on "shit list" coming up :D :D :D

Fockin Coooool man.....!

...This is probably my favorite piece from you man... ...your banjo usage is both cool and unique. I have only one nit in this... ...I didnt like the keyboard bass. I know you do the best with what youve got, and this is certainly sufficient rhythm-wise, but this little ditty is screaming for a slap bass guitar line to fu(n)ck it up proper. VERY cool one here mix. ....dug this a bunch!

mix,
This was really cool. I was not sure what to expect and I did not expect this. I thought your mix was really good. The drums sound good. It begs for real bass :(. Banjo sounded really cool. Maybe a little less reverb.

Hey it loops really nice, like it never ends. Wait, I think you need need another beat or so in there ;) :)

Really cool. Let's hear some more banjo experimentation! :D

Whoa, electronic horsemusic. Krafthorse!

Best banjo sound so far. Chords are even leaning towards Fleck's harmonic spectrum. Lovely.

Needs a melody. A harp/sax/violin solo?

I'd love to hear some real instrument doubling the parts at 1:18.

Drums could be a little bit more....eh.....fluid/groovy. Or more electronic and weird. Could go both ways, IMBO (I've stopped having 'humble' opinion, from now on I will have blunt opinions LOL :D )

Awesome! I love this Mixmkr. Very unique combination of instruments and progressions..

I have no critiques except that the bass should be redone with a real bass.. Just my opinion...

Sounds great.. Keepem' comin'!

Gush

That about says it.

Very nice. I liked the bass sound. Very Axel F ish sounding :D and a very interesting contrast to the banjo sound.

Very nice.

Another keeper for me.

I put this one through my play-it-on-everything test. Your head space is what kicks this tune so well - yeah I'm from Germany and I didn't know what a Beyer ribbon mic was - but I was able to listen to your tune in my Audi A6 cruising at 120mph on the Autobahn - and trust me, you ain't really heard it!! I had to pump up the speed to 130. Love the bass (and what the hell do I know?) the balance between all those instruments is enviable - on headphones, no less, sheeeesh.

Hey Mix -- I haven't been on the board in a few days, but I did get a chance to download your banjo and non-banjo version of the last tune, but I didn't get a chance to respond :(

Suffice to say, I liked both versions...but I really dig that banjo. May not have worked so well with the vocals you put on there (Lord I Ask) but it was a cool arrangement nonetheless. The one with the vocals has more of an 80's, contemporary feel. Though both arrangements are more or less the same (save for the banjo vs. vocal) the vocal actually makes the tune sound more contemporary and the banjo gives it kind of a more timeless feel in a strange sense. Not good or bad, just a different feel. I dig your singers vocals by the way. :)

Okay, now listening to the new one (back on the subject)

Sounds good on my cheap speakers. The banjo sounds like it has a lot of reverb on there which makes it kind of sound far away...kind of a cool effect, but not sure if that was what you were going for. I like the organ flourishes in there and you have built a good rhythm track. It sounds like it is waiting for vocals during the banjo break. It is a cool arrangement and it sounds like it is waiting for those vocals to sit right in...not sure if that is what you are doing there, but the arrangement sounds good.

I also like the guitar coming in near the end and going back into the banjo piece. Overall a cool little piece. Nice playing all around.

:)

Sounding cool. I wouldn't mind hearing a little more depth on the banjo. It sounds a little flat (depth not tuning) maybe because of the delays. Nice pickin'.

When I first heard this, I thought "DAMN!!! That's a good banjo sample!!"

And then I read the rest of your initial post!!

Did you do the guitar parts as well.

That's a sweet sounding banjo.

Not sure about the drums. maybe vary them a little.

Outside of that, pretty damn nice! :)

slucie....thanks for the stop by... so where is sammicide?:(

pfingers...also, thanks for the listen...effects are for newbie players...me!

freshears...yeah...my Ric is sitting over in the corner scowling at me...next time...maybe!

participle... drums..roland workstation...nothing fancy...

Guern...see freshears response... thanks for the listen (maybe you could help me out sometime...eh?)

skids...more on the way...LOOK out!! thanks for the comments

Ped...yes, after toying with this, I realize something on top of this is needed. This is more or less an experimentation with my new toy... Wish I could play alto...or something like that....even guitar!!

scottboyher... glad you liked it.. another vote for real bass.. WHAT is THIS>.. a conspiracy>>!!??:D

Jag..your comments made me smile...thanks for your listen... keep all ya want...der free!!

Mr bbs folk hero (gitarz). ..the fact that this was played on the Autobahn, is so cool...in an Audi yet too. and at 130!! I love it. that really really made me smile. that made it ALL worth it. thanks, dude.

boydrj... thank you also... been playing around with your tune...but having some problems fitting stuff on top.. I probably need to PM you about them.. thanks for you comments. I take them for mostly positive... K?? :D

tex...didn't expect to see you around these parts, pardner... glad you could make it. flat, eh?...yeah...working with trying to get a sound I like... gimme some time.. thanks for the listen and your time to comment. mucho appreciato.

Ms T...and thank you... yeah..I did all the parts... even the sequenced drums!! banjo sample...I'll take that as a compliment too...ha!!,,, no...I understand...thanks alot for stopping by and commenting.

OBSERVATIONS...basically no one is saying DO NOT MIX WITH HEADPHONES. Maybe some of the 'too much effects' might be another way to say it, but I feel I am starting to do ok, actually with cans, instead of 110dB outta my URIE/JBL's. 120dB in the cans is much more relaxing!! But, seriously, I feel I am proving to MYSELF, I can learn to use headphones. My mixes don't seem to suit me better whether mixed over speakers or over cans. Plus, I can hear the detail MUCH better in the phones. Oh well... maybe I can take some $%!T from a couple of naysayers on that subject and spice things up around here...;) ..or..I'll change my mind when I am off my meds.
