A Mic for my voice....

i currently have a single MXL v93m which i hear is on the extremely bright side...

I use it for rap vocals only. I have a mid to deep voice...pretty powerful and commanding voice depending on the song.. as you can tell at my soundclick...http://www.soundclick.com/wargasmsmusic.htm

Preamps i use an audio buddy, which i think has done the job, and done it pretty well. And depending on what day it is (im horrible with settings and mixing since i dont have time to really sit down and tweak for long), i like the sound.

I also have a m-audio omnistudio usb for my laptop...When i pair the v93m with the Omnistudio preamps i have alot more siblance..its damn near impossible to get rid of the "S"'s


Anyway...i was thinking, i want to try a second mic...

$200.00 or less range. New or used..

right now, im debating the Rode Nt1-a and the AT3035, but im open to suggestions.


PS, i also have a friend who is willing to sell me a Mbox for only 50 bucks. Would i be better off with the mbox than the omnistudio? Im not experience with pro-tools, and i understand i cant use cool edit (which i use) with the mbox.

I like RØDE. I use an NT3 and it sounds very good on male vox.

The NT1 is a good choice. Check out Studio Projects C1. This is not an all-purpose mic, but for vocals in your price range, it would be an excellent buy. Check out some of the reviews: Recording magazine (Feb 04.,I think), Electronic Musician (date?), Sound on Sound (date?). Users on this site seem to like it-do a search.

Other contenders, which may be out of your price range: Rode NTK; Audio Technica 4000 series (4030, 4050 & 4060). Some people really like the AT4060, but it is close to 1K. Also, the Soundelux U195 gets a lot of praise for vocals, but it is close to 1K as well.

Keep in mind your signal chain (preamp, compressor, eq, etc.) will affect the final result. A nice budget preamp is the FRM RNP.

I love my NT-1 (and suspect it would be great for hip-hop), but since you mentioned sibilance as a problem, this may not be the mic for you. If you can spring for it, a Large Diaphragm Dynamic mic, like the Shure SM7, Electrovoice RE20, or Sennheiser MD421 might be more to your liking. These mics tend to lessen sibilance and are also very popular for rap. In the condenser category, I've read that the Oktava MK-319 is a "darker" sounding mic that might work.

to grunter, i was considering the C1 as well, but then i heard some people saying that their C1 was much too bright for most applications. I am already working with an extremely bright microphone, so i thought if i do buy a second mic, i wanted something a little different, that would still work well with my voice.


Thanks strave and Giraffe, i decided to stick with what i know. I might just get it for a friend who doesnt have an interface and needs to record from her laptop.

Scrubs, i have heard the electrovoice RE20 on hiphop vocals from a guy with a voice similar to mine...., sounds pretty good.


I almost bought a 319 when i bought my mic, thats when musicians friend was selling them out...but i was concerned that it would be too dark. Havent really heard anyone use it for hiphop vocals yet.

olfunk, thanks.I really appreciate the compliment...distortedrumble (who is also not a hiphop fan) also heard my page and liked my stuff...
that stuff on the page i linked isnt even my more serious material. Thats more of just spur of the moment stuff. Working on an independant album with a group we will be pressing up 1000 copies in a month or so..., and i think my recordings sound alot better for that...(i spent more time on it, and had someone else mix it!)...anyway, thanks again, its very encouraging when you can appeal to someone who doesnt even listen to your genre of music.
