I did get them, (about $450 for the pair !)and I am pretty happy with them. Honestly, though, I have not used them enough at reasonably high volume to make many comparisons to any other monitors. I will tell you what I do know:
1. They look very cleanly and sturdily constructed. In-fact, by looking at the electronics module on the back, it is painfully obvious that it is a Mackie Copy. I haven't set them side-by-side, but I have looked at the mackies at music stores, and they are uncannily similar, though not really identical.
2. They come with individual calibration curves to verify the frequency response is per-spec (presumably in an anechoic chamber)
3. They sound very good. I can't claim they sound as good or better than the Mackies or Tannoys, etc, because I have not A/B'd them. I have heard the Mackies, Events, JBLs, Tannoys, Yamahas, ...and some others at high volume in a MARS studio-showroom. I though the Powered Tannoy Reveals were the clear winners. I never listen to those volumes in my apartment, so I really don't know how the Behrs would compare. I do MOST of my monitoring through
Beyer DT831 headphones, which I specifically searched out for thier flat, natural response. The Behrs sound nearly identical (at low volume) to the DT831's when I take the headphones off.
ONE PROBLEM: They make a loud Power-on thump if you turn them on, and then off again before the electronics has a chance to "drain". The thump doesn't occur if you leave them off for a couple hrs. It also doesn't occur if you leave them on, but have them go off and they come back on due to the "Auto-sleep" mode. So it is not a big problem. It is just irritating if you don't know about it and plan your sessions to avoid it.
I even called the Behringer Rep to complain that I thought this was a minor design flaw. He agreed, but says it is normal for operation. It shouldn't damage anything. Then. I also saw someone complaining on another BBS that their Event 20/20s do the same thing.
Summary: They sound good and I am satisfied, but I can't really make any claims about how they compare directly to the other top contenders. They definitely sound "good and accurate", but if you are really determined to find the best, you had better find a review from someone who was able to directly A/B them. At the low volumes I use, and in my small room, I don't feel like they have really gotten a valid "workout"
Peace,
Rick
