Don't stare at the eye.
Check this out! My brother and his 12 y.o. son, Jack, came over to play in Uncle Strat's studio today. They both play guitar and I guess my little dungeon is a bit of a playground to them.

Anyway, thought we'd have some fun and do some tracking with Jack. We picked some drum loops and he did Before I Forget by... (okay, here's my age--I already forgot! I'd never heard the song before).

He likes the challenge of double tracking--and the result of hearing his guitar sound so big. I'm not sure, but I think it was the first time he played bass. We just drop tuned it to D, and he mirrored the guitar part.

We had a blast and it turned out alright (If it gets a little monotonous, at least skip to the end--he had fun doing the big rock star ending.)

Before I Forget

Sounds great (your guitars always do). Great to get the young ones involved like this. I'll bet he had a blast.

Thanks Zero! Y'know, I thought the guitars sounded good too and later in the evening after they left--I got jealous. I love recording other folks but I wanted to record my guitar! So I tracked a bit. Mostly it sucked. Maybe it's easier to be detached and make someone else sound good. Oh well today I was a producer and not a performer.

Bottom line: you're right, he had a blast. And I had a blast "producing" him. That's enough for me! :D

If this is the 12 yo then I'm giving up on guitar... I'm impressed!

Wow! 12 years old. That sounds real good, I wish I could play like that at 12 (or even 32 for that matter). One thing for sure uncle strat is gonna have a hard time keeping the nephew out of the studio from now on. :D

Same here. I started at 12--and it took me forever to get anywhere. Assuming it continues to hold his attention, the sky could be the limit for a kid like that.

But until he hits the big time, he's welcome to call my studio home base.

I just got through cutting the strings off all my guitars...:D

He can call his first CD..*Uncle Strat's House*

Uncle Strat's House...has a nice ring to it!

The creative burst we were talking about--that I hoped would coincide with a weekend of opportunity? Didn't happen so much. I did get a burst of energy, and did a some cleaning, some dirt moving (hey--I love to drive the tractor!) and yes--even if wasn't my own stuff--I did get to spend some time in studio.

Guess I can't complain! :)

Strat is a great word to play with...pardon the pun..I just couldn't help myself!:D

Ya know what?..I forsee a time coming, that will be full of coinciding..when you least expect it..and look out, Uncle Strat's house will rock down..no pod..but that ear blaster Carvin thingy you have.

Tractor! That is one metal monster I've not tried to master...just how huge a tractor are we talking here..Lawnboy or John Deer size?

I have vowed to myself, that before the year is up, a new PC for recording only will be in use..and..that I will take time to master the old Tascam with knobs, sliders, pushbuttons and lights!!

Very cool for a 12 year old. OK the double tracking could be tighter. But geez it's a 12 year old.

Forgive the hijacking, but it's my thread--so what the heck. Besides, I love my tractor. (My son loves it even more!) It's a "real" tractor, as opposed to a lawn boy, but "real" tractors run the gammut of sizes--and mine's not that big: 30 hp, 3 cyl diesel--but it is 4 wheel drive. It's got a bucket on the front and we mount various implements on the back as well.

I'm gonna try to upload a pic bit I'm posting from my phone, and I'm not sure how to do that.

Looks like that worked. BTW--that's not mine, just a pic of the same model (Kubota B2710) that I found online.

Tractor talk now over. :D

Holy crap! That was kick arse! Ok, that kid as got talent! I'm OK at guitar now (I'm 17 if you don't already know) but when I started out (I believe I was maybe one year younger) Oh god I sucked. I played horribly for like 5 years after that. Maybe longer. I'm still not that great. You did a really good job with the production, and he did a really good job playing.

-Adam.

Pretty good feel for a 12 year old!
Yeah, sounds like Slipknot's Before I forget...love the original.
Now if Uncle Strat starts to teach some soloing scales, he's well on his way....!:D
Wonderful guitar sound by the way.
