i'm looking to get my very first soundcard and ive been looking around... i need someting simple that can record 1 or 2 tracks in high quality. to which i can record additional layers... mainly acoustics and vocals...

so am i better off getting something like a delta 44 or 66 or even and audiophile, attaching it to a decent mixer and recording like that.

which will cost me around 300 bucks

or should i invest an m-audio firewire, or omnistudio, that has everything "built in" and saves me the hassle of a mixer?

which will cost me about 400

thanx funky1

either way will be fine. As long as the mixer you get in the first is really a decent mixer. If not, the firewire or omnistudio might be a better way to go.

funky - can you anticipate where you'll be a year from now? If you're never going to need more than you describe, then the best use of your budget would be a good quality two channel preamp (do a search here for pre amps) and a more straightforward soundcard (the EMU 0404 gets great reviews and I like mine a LOT). The EMU card is $100, leaving you $300 for a nice pre like the RNP or something. If you get a mixer you'd be paying for extra ins and outs that you don't need. On the other hand, if you think you might in the future...

I don't know that a mixer is a 'hassle' as such. They just give you flexibility.

I use the Yamaha MG12/4 mixer and a delta 44. Today that would cost you under $350.

If you don't need 4 track recording, you could go for an Audiophile or an E-mu 0404 and the smaller Yamaha MG10/2 and get the lot for under $200.

You do need to think about your future requirements though, and purchase accordingly

Go firewire if you're planning on using a laptop, otherwise @ $250, the omnistudio is a good deal
