A little disappointed with my Akai DPS16!

Yes it's an OLD thread, but....

Those current owners of Akai DPS-16 probably already know this, but for people searching through past threads that are researching gear:

With the version 3 O.S. on the Akai DPS-16 you can either send your data out for mastering, by recording your high-res tracks as WAV (via the SCSI port), or you can master it on the Akai by converting your final 2-track stereo mix to redbook "quality" just prior to burning a CD.

oops, one other thing...

The Akai DPS-16 also supports automation but to do so it does require the use of an external sequencer, FYI.

Hello everyone...

I just spent most of the past holiday weekend recording on my new Akai DPS16. Thanks to the cooperation of my wonderful wife (who put up with my prolonged sessions), I was able to get six songs done...four originals and two "covers" ("Hello, Mary Lou" by Ricky Nelson, and "If Not For You" by Bob Dylan, as recorded by George Harrison). I can't add anything to the 24-bit discussion, but I will say that the good old 16-bit recordings I did sound fantastic. I'm very, very happy with the sound quality of the Akai. (BTW, I mix down to a Philips CDR775 burner).

This is an old, old thread.

Since then, after being 'educated' by sonusman, I bought a Tascam CDRW700.... which dithers my 24 bit recordings down to 16bit/44.1kHz instead of truncating them.

Yes, there is a significant difference in sound quality.
Thanx again, Ed. ;)

This post is pretty old now, and havent even been trying to record in 24 bit mode. 16 bit has been great and I have been getting great results from it!

Heres a link to all my songs that have been recorded with it.

details, details

Buck,

When I dug up this thread I too stated that it was an old thread. I also stated that I had *new* information which you seem to have misunderstood, or not read. The *new* information I wanted to add to the thread is that you can indeed downsample with the DPS-16 (no, not truncate)

But I'd like to ask you to be a bit more specific about your setup. Do you have the tascam attached to a DPS-16 or is it a stand-alone unit? If it is attached to the DPS, is it attached via SCSI or S/PDIF?

Am I supposed to say, "This is a REAL old thread"?

Howdy.

The bit conversion on v3.0 dithers, not truncates.

I tend to be redundant from time to time.

Anyhoo....

The Tascam CDRW700 is a stand-alone unit and I use S/PDIF to connect it to the DPS-16.

Did I mention that it's a stand-alone unit?

Sorry... I tend to be redundant from time to time. :D

Buck,

Thanks for the clarification.

I think while I get my feet under myself using the DPS-16 that I'll just keep it simple and stay in 16-bit/44.1kHz mode, but since my CDRW doesn't have audio inputs it's nice to know I can always start recording in higher resolution and still do a good downsample.

I also want to learn to save WAV files from the DPS-16 since I'm having some trouble with my computer and soundcard at the moment.

WAV files

If you have 2.0 or better, you can save as WAV file in EDIT.
