A little disappointed with Marshall V67

Recently, I ordered an MXL V67 from the US (here in Australia, they're listed at around the US$350 mark).

I was looking for a companion to my Rode NT1000. From what I'd heard, it sounded like this mic would be a bit darker and fuller-sounding than the Rode.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that it suits my voice. I found that, compared to the Rode, it did give a thicker sound, but that the sound was also kind of clogged-up, or constipated, or something - sorry, don't really know how to describe it...)

Anyone think of some mics in, say, the $US250-550 range that might sound a little darker and richer than the Rode, but without compromising detail too much?

Just for reference, here's a couple of rough mixes of a demo of one of my songs: one has vocals recorded on the V67, and the other has vocals recorded on the NT1000. There are no effects/EQ on the vocals, aside from a little compression. Who knows - maybe some of you will prefer the vocals recorded with the V67...

I'm pretty sure Geocities blocks all requests for mp3 files.

Thanks,

I've amended the original post to a site that works....

I STRONGLY prefered the V67. It was warmer and fuller and more natural sounding. The NT1000 had that stupid "Rode sound" thing going, where there's so much distortion around 6Khz that it makes the vowels sound completely unnatural. The Rode was also thinner sounding.

I like the NT1000 alot, but not on your voice......i agree with bleyrad 100%.....

I'm not normally a fan of the V67, but I think it works on your voice in this particular example.

gotta say.... I really liked the 67 on your voice. BTW i like the guitar sound what kind of guitar/ mics did you use?

Good tune also. let me know if you put a cd out.

Thanks! I've got about 30 songs backed up at the moment, which is why I'm trying to put some recording gear together... will make a note to let you know.

It's interesting that everyone so far has preferred the V67... that tells me something. I should re-evaluate...

The guitar is a Asturias classical (I think one of their lower-range models, but still nice), and I recorded it with the NT1000. One other interesting thing I've noticed with recording guitars on the NT1000 is that they dont sound as bright as it makes the vocals.

On the V67 track your voice jumped out more. What kind of guitar were you useing and what pre's for the vox and guitar? anyway send me an e mail. Would love to hear some more tracks.

I've found the studio projects c3 to be a bit darker than most of the LDCs in that price range. Your milage may vary.

That's exactly why this mic is becoming popular. It's primary range makes it sit in the mix yet keeps the vocal noticed.

:D he he. That's a good one. On a sparse, two-track vocal + accoustic guitar, maybe.

Try it in a denser mix, and it has this way of just sort of blending in with everything else and getting all mushy-mushy

That's not necessarily true. I have several mixes that are pretty dense and I had to opt for the 67 over a Neuman 103 or an NTK. It just punched up better.

It always depends on the voice. If your using it on a rather bright voice then its going to sound similiar to using a C1 on a dark voice.

Thats why its so important to buy a mic that works with your voice.

My Neumann TLM193 is not a mic i grab averagely because it is such a dark microphone. But i at times have clients come in that have very bright voices, and no other mic in my cabinet will work right. If i didnt have it, i probably would have had a crappy vocal recording.

Fully agree with others above: The V67 sounds warm, full and nice on your voice. I guess the NT1000 may sound closer to what your voice may be "in real life" -- but it also sounds a bit more boring than the V67 in this context. I guess you're acustomed to the NT1000, so you miss out what you're used to.

I'd certainly keep the V67 were I you, and be happy about it! Between the two, I think you have a nice palette.

You can try to work on the placement of the mic to change the sound. Try moving slightly further away from the V67 (or closer to the NT1000) -- this may make them sound a bit more like one another in the context of what you did above. You could also try to angle the NT1000 slightly to make it a bit "duller", I guess.

Thanks, that's interesting. Actually, I think that through the NT1000, my voice sounds brighter than it actually is, and that through the V67, it sounds a bit darker.

I'm finding that I am getting some sibilance problems with the NT, but maybe I need a better pop shield than the one I made out of some pantyhose... (and I can tell you that I got some odd looks from the salesgirl when I went in to buy the cheap pantyhose. Didn't bother explaining what I was really using it for, because she'd never have believed me anyway...!) and/or experiment more with mic-placement.

Maybe it would be good to have another mike that is kind of inbetween the V67 and the NT... or maybe I should just forget about that for a while and do some more recording.
