but I have a question regarding live gigs..

Myself and a friend want to start gigging at small bars as a two-piece, but most two-piece bands also have a pre-programmed bass/drum track running off a laptop during the songs....

Where can I find these pre-programmed tracks...do I have to program them myself?? or are they on the net somewhere?

Does anyone know what I am talking about?!?!

thx in advance!

This ans. includes one of those " you had to be there" funny stories.

It depends on how much time you want to invest. A buddy of mine and I are tortured with reality tv that our wives watch, we will counter with what we call "playing a game of fruity loops". we play the most annoying floops crap we can program in front of them, it takes minutes or less. They hate it. On our laptops.
so yes with flps for 100 bucks you can program some loops and play out, you would get more versatility if you used some downloaded beats as flps doesn't come stock with any thing great and use another program for editing. I use Sonar and will cut and paste sample loops adjust the tempo then cut in fills from fruity. This takes less time to program although you need another program. You can use a lot cheaper programs than sonar also. not the best ans but im in a rush to leave work and go on my 11 day vacation.
see ya

of course you have to make the loops yourself! it's your music isn't it? most of those bands who are running "loops" from there laptops are actually just running finished, recorded songs from their computer with the parts that they're playing muted (like karaoke). if you want to create these parts by programming them out on the computer (because you don't have drums or whatever to record for you backing track), you have a few options...I would recommend fruityloops because it's easy to program and it's very very versitile when you import your own wav samples (you can find those online, record them, or edit some other sample into oblivion with something like sound forge). fruityloops also has a built in sequencer, so you can sequence the patterns you make. if you want to just download royalty free finished loops, and sequence those, you'd be better off with ACID...but if you're not going for an electronica vibe and you want to be a little more original, I'd sugjest fruityloops.

I play as a duet with a friend too. We record songs on a 4 track then either mute the parts we want to play "live" or substitute instruments, that way we can sound like a 4,5,or6 piece band. with a little practice doing this you can even add harmony and back up vocals. the only problem with doing it this way is that it dosen't leave any opportunity for improvision so you'll have to stick to doing a song pretty cloce to the same way every time. There are other options but if you are on a budget you might want to give it a try, experiment and find what works best for you. Good luck, Dani
