A good first guitar?

Hey there!

First off, let me just say, I'm new here, and I'm not sure if this is allowed, exactly. If not, all I ask is a point in the right direction :D

I've been umm'ing and ahh'ing for a while now, and I've decided that I'm going to learn to play the guitar. While I know NOTHING about music, I'm willing to learn.

I'm looking for a cheap, but decent quality electric guitar. I'm not after something which is good looking or one-of-a-kind, just something that will get the job done. I saw a guitar on eBay, which from what I've read, seems pretty good. It's a "HAMER XT Sunburst Flatop", and it's $265AU. Would this be a good first guitar? Or would you guys recommended something else?

Or do you think that diving in with an electric guitar isn't a good idea?

Squier Strats are actually decent, for the money you pay for them. Geech, there are so many decent cheap guitars (if you don't mind supporting China's economic takeover of the world), it's hard to say what the good ones are.

I see nothing wrong with starting with an electric, as long as you pay your electricity bill...
 
I like the ibanez SG and or the Ibanez "roadstar" .. =. but that's for phat sound either clean or dirty...

buying online is NOT best... pawnshops and git stores (used) best idea cuz you can check the "feel" and it's usually a good idea to pay under $200 for the electric "copies" as long as the neck is straight and the frets don't buzz, and intonation set right, it's all good. to play a cheap guitar great is better than suckin ass on an $800 "brand"
 
Buy a used Mexican fender strat....for between $100 and $200.

That way if you stick with it you will have a decent guitar and if you don't you can get your money back out of it.
 
Find someone who can go with you to the store to check out the guitar - if you don't know how to play, you won't know what the feel is supposed to be.
Also - remember that learning to play any instrument takes determination and time. Hours every week, not just 'once in a while'.
 
I'm along the lines with the other poster... PLAY THE DAMN THING BEFORE YOU BUY IT! especially if you haven't played before... goto a shop, see how the neck feels, ask to be shown how to play a few cords and see how your fingers feel on it... and hopefully you'll get inspired
