I used a tmd1000 for a while so I can probably answer a few questions.

First of all,
the tmd 1000 is not a bad mixer at all. It takes a little getting used to, but so does everything digital IMHO

I don't really know why it is so cheap, other then the fact they they did stop making them at one point, but as far as I know they resumed production.
To connect to an ADAT you will need a converter made by tascam that hooks the the mixer's TDIF connector to the ADAT's lightpipe. I think it is called an IF-TAD. I have seen them at a few websites.
As for drawbacks, I can't personally think of any, although I only used my tascam with a computer.

You can use it with a computer without any special cables if you use the analog outs to your soundcards analog ins.
If you have a SPDIF input on your soundcard you can use it, although either of these ways will only let you record two tracks at a time. The ideal way to use it would be to get a TDIF equipped soundcard. I used a Mixtreme, but there are a few others. Using the TDIF connector you can record eight track and playback eight tracks at the same time, using the tascam's AD/DA converters(which are good

.
Any one interested should check out the DIGITAL MIXER section of the tascam BB
