A few observations I've made while mixing 30 track monsters....

1)If I lay 2 tracks on top of each other in the same channel, system bogs down even in less than 24 track sessions
2)If you put a stereo track through plug in effects as opposed to mono, the effects actually come out in stereo.......even if both sides of the stereo file are the same. Wheras if you use a mono file, the effects are mono regardless.. I'm sure most of you know this, but I think it's weird
3) In reference to above, using multiple stereo tracks taxes your sysem much more and causes problems

On one track I have 28 mono tracks and 3 busses with 2 effects each. Runs fairly smoothly unless I make on the fly volume adjustments, but doesn't crash

Another track I had 28 tracks and more than half were stereo.....serious problems. Started bogging down with 2 busses. I guess the stereo tracks are basically twice as big as mono...didn't check the numbers yet (I'm at work now), but I guess it makes sense.
