hey guys, im back, sorry for the hiatus. anyways, well catch up later. i just did an Analog to Digital conversion (VHS to .WAV) and its 2 and 1/2 hours of spoken word. very little music. now there is a very prevelant hiss in the background and i need to remove it. i can't use a any of my graphic equalizer plug-ins, they make the file skip and shit. don't know y, but they do. i can use a parametric or paragrapic equalizer. i think it might be all frequencies around 16.5, but i cut that and all surrounding freqs, and it was still there, just a little quieter. what frequencies could it be, and what could i use to fix it. i have multiband compressors, noise gates, and many equalizers. please help. let me know if this could be the problem or if i can do anything else. thanks!

Try a low pass filter with a fairly steep slope, slide it down untill you are loosing to much high end for the program, them back off a bit. Somewhere in there is how much you can toss. Parts of the hiss could still extend below that point though.
Compression is out. Wrong direction. Expansion (low ratio gating), noise reduction maybe.

No. That would be a single filter type available on allot of eq plugs. You can get a similar effect by pulling down progressively lower high faders on the graphic though.
The Sonitus and Timeworks eq's have multiple filter types for example.

If you can break down the 2 and 1/2 hour file into smaller sections, I'll see if I can get rid of the hiss for you using Cool Edit Pro 2.1, I have had very good results using CEP for hiss/noise reduction.

PM me if you want to, we can setup a file transfer by way of AIM.
