a couple of question I need answered

Ok I have a pretty long set of question. OK, I have a triton rack, motiff rack, mo phatt, roland xp-80, and emu vintage rack. I also have a akai mpc2000xl with a delta 1010 soundcard. My computer spec or 1.7 gig asus a7m266 mobo and 2 0 gig hard drives. I putting together a studio dedicated to hip hop and Rnb. I have been do track for a long time and I have aquired enough money to buy all my on equpipment so I can do it at my house and my own pace instead of borrowing someone else studio. OK........first Can you tell how would I hook all my equipment up to run to a computer software (cubase sx). I wnat my mpc to be the master I would like to be able to do it track for track midi so I could add effect and EQn to each one individually. (is this possible). SOmeone told me that I would have to have all the patches downloaded into the software to be able to do this.

Or would I have to sequence the whole beat into the mpc and then dump each track as audio into the software program, but if I do this how would I sync it together.


2) In recording with my mpc how would I acess all my different sound modules since my mpc on has two midi in and outs


If anyone has a better setup solution please help me

Man you got so many options it's kinda hard to help you... Shit is almost at brain surgery level with that many in/outs and connections. I'ma give a shot anyway...

Alright what's your computer audio interface right now? Do you have midi for your computer yet?

If you don't have one then you need one. With that much shit you got you need to look at a MIDIMAN USB 4x4 midi box or
better. I didn't go that route cuz all i'm hardware as a mutha... I just needed one in and one (got 2 though) mainly because I never plan to sequence with computer. If you don't want that option of computer sequencing (and module programming, back, etc.) then the MIDIMAN 3x8 is a good idea... It gives you 3 ins and 8 outs and front panel switches which lets you do some crazy routing. This shit here is up to taste so you need to know what you want to do. If you are still just trying to get your shit plugged up then I can't call it. If you know what you want holla back and I might can help.

Then only real way you'll be able to use all 16 channels on every module is to sequence with a computer. Otherwise you'll have to make some sacrfices on how many channels you can get out of each module. That's the only reason I'd say with the 8x8 or 4x4 USB joints... I think the 8x8 can function as a standalone (without the computer) midi patchbay but I don't know about the 4x4 (should). Following me?

You have a small ass hard drive for audio... I got a 32gig and i'm backing shit up on a regular and I don't even do much multitracking with my computer...

What's your mixer cuz? You need something 16 channels or better for all you got. Better is just better and i'd go with at least a MACKIE 24/8 if I was you. It'll help you deal with that in/outs shit much easier that a 1604. You got the option of using damn near 30 outs on your equipment. Imagine if you decide you need all of em (doubt it'll ever happen) and you realize you only got hal the inputs on your mixer.

Man all those in and outs will drive you nuts... My suggestion is to route everything through a PATCH BAY (midi and audio). You can tap all your ins and outs from one panel. You won't have to unplug stuff just to run it somewhere else.

I just saw you use a DELTA 1010... You will need midi... USB is an option so is the joystick port (1 in 1 out).... This shit makes my head hurt so you gotta figure it out or ask some specific question.

MPC to modules-------> MPC is a bitch to use like that... You gotta setup your modules more than your MPC. Shit like setuping the module up to only respond to a few midi channels and turn the rest off. Not sure how to do it on any of your equipment... So it like this

TRITON on midi out 1 channels 1-8 with the midi thru going to the MO phatt which is set to respond to channels 9-16. Same typa thing on MPC out 2 and yadda yadda.... Man I hope you are understanding this cuz I'm don't really answer these types questions... Too much thought involved...

To make thing easier would I be able to use the mpc as a sequence and after the beat is complete I could just plug all the audio outs of each sound module and keyboard to a diffterent channel in my soundcard and just record it live as audiio after the beat is complete
 
yeah you could do that, but if u have more than 9 audio tracks(8 analog, 1 spdif)you gotta to record in multiple takes, so you have to Sync your mpc to your PC to keep each take Nsync. or i could be wrong.

I'm saying... To me (maybe it's just me) it's easier to have a wide open routing path already setup rather pluggin stuff up everytime you wanna do something different.

Peep... My mixer runs to my recorder right... But my mixer also runs to my speakers. Now I can hear all my models and shit when I wanna do a beat. When i wanna record them then I hit a few buttons and I record that same shit.

Which sounds easier plugging all that shit in and out again or pushing a few buttons? Fell Me?

Shit goes deeper than that cuz you got a mess of ins and outs to deal with. You might wanna sample a cd with your MPC on day then your Triton the next. CD player has one stereo output... You can have it running through the mixer and just tap a few buttons or you could just patch it up with 2 1" cables... Or play a cd back but if it's plugged into your MPC then you'll be pulling plugs again.

Midi... I gotta gang of different controllers (MPC, RM1X, keys from 2 places, DAW clock, Laptop midi clock, and some more shit) and I may wanna flip it from the MPC and DAW sync'd to the keys play the laptop. Bump three buttons and I can sync all that shit to my DAW too.

i wish that was my starter kit. i started off with an asr-10 (not bad by any stretch of the imagination)...a bossvf1...a rode nt2 mic...lexicon core 2 soundcard...some other stuff....

the shit im getting now, is all upgrades, ive decided that im serious, so im gettin serious equipment.

@ hiphoper....let me see the specs on some of this, and ill give you some tips if you still need some.
 
Thanks for all the help guys, but could someone tell me what would be the best way for me to record with the equipment I listed, would it be midi or audio? My main concern is that I want to have each track seperate so I could eq and put effects on each one individually? could someone just point me in the right direction so I can get started.
 
My bad... I guess maybe I was slipping a little too much info into my posts. I'm thinking that you knew you needed some shit and wanted help figuring what.

Do you have midi in/outs for your computer?

If not you can't sync your equipment properly so multitracking is not gonna work for you.

I don't know maybe SMPTE if your MPC has the chip but I have never dealt with that.

Correct me if i'm wrong but you don't have much experience with midi and audio multitracking. Correct?

If that's the case... Midi in/out/thru is used to communicate only data (sync. note, whatever) between different equipment and doesn't send any type of audio signal.
 
Yea lazi I have experience in multitracking with audio but iam trying to get into the midi stuff. My question is what would be the best way to record with the equipment I have that would allow me to eq and effect each individual track. THATS IT!

The way I been doing it is I have my audio outs of my modules going into my soundcard. After I finish the beat on my mpc I press record on cubase sx and play on the mpc and cubase records the sequenced beat. THey only thing I hate about that is that sometime I use each sound module for more than one sound and the two or three sounds I use get recorded on one track.

I just want to know how would I be able to do it midi wihich will allow my mpc and computer to work together that will allow me to eq and effect each sound as needed

That's what i'm saying... You need to midi sync the hardware and software midi clocks up so you can make multiple runs of your sequences... You mute out (on the MPC) what tracks you don't need at the time... Record 8 tracks then mute those and do it again until all your sounds are down as individual audio tracks. Now you can process em...

To sync the MPC as a slave to the software using the DELTA 1010's midi in/out... Go into the software and configure your midi settings so that the software sees your 1010's midi in/out... I have used CUBASE a little but I don't know jack about right now. b

MIDI OUT of the DELTA 1010 ---> MIDI IN 1 of the MPC

Set the software to send MMC (MIDI MACHINE CONTROL) or MTC (MIDI TIME CODE)... Either one should work...

Set the MPC to recieve MMC... I just turn both ins and outs to MMC or MTC and the turn the 2 OFF options to ON.

Or if you want your MPC to be the MASTER CLOCK.

When you hit play on the MPC it should say WAITING FOR MMC. If you hit play on the computer the MPC should start playing.

Mute the tracks you don't want or whatever and start recording em one by one or however many you have plugged up. When you get those done do some more. It's all sync'd up...

MPC MIDI OUT to DELTA MIDI IN

Set the MPC to send MMC or MTC...

Set the software to RECEIVE MMC or MTC...

Hit play on the MPC and the computer should start playing...
