A couple of newbie questions

#1. Where can I "hear" what you guys are talking about when you are describing microphones as being "bright" or "dark"?

#2. When editing a track with effects, is it usually done on the whole track or part and parcel? For instance, I've been trying to edit vocal tracks with, say echo or reverb. Is it common practice to select the whole track and just have the same reverb effect over the whole vocal track?
 
2. Editing tracks is a personal preference. You do what you like. It varies with different songs. When I use verbs and such with vocals, it usually applies to the whole track. If your creating some strange material like vocals going from dry to wet you would only apply effects on the parts you need it on. Get my drift.
