i'm new to recording and have tried very few songs with the equipment i currently have. i just wanted to get something out there for people to listen to and give feedback and tips. i know this song is probably way below the standard of most songs posted to this board. in fact it may even sound silly. i plan to do more work and keep posting my progress. anyway here is a link.

hey dude.

Checked out the clip. It's a good little vibe. You're right in that you've got a ways to go but it's almost more fun to hear someone and the potential they have. Hearing extremely polished tracks all over the mp3 mixing forum can get boring.

The good news is your playing is definitely good enough to get better recordings. Sometimes, you get dudes who have a long way to go in performance AND recording. You're not that dude.

Anyway, at this stage of the game, I would suggest experimenting with mic placement on your acoustic and doubled tracks (re-record the same acoustic). Are you recording one track at a time? Tell us more about how you laid it down and maybe we can suggest some interesting places to go with your recording.

Keep rockin'.

Stone.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions. I do record one track at a time. I have an idea and work up some rudimentary midi drums. then i record a guitar and then in this case i recorded a second guitar while listening to headphones. I have a shure sm-57 mic. Can someone recommend a mic that may be better for acoustic guitar? and keep in mind i purchased the shure mic based on the price...

Everyone has a recommendation for micing acoustics but I'll tell you what I've used.

Rode NT1. good response (like night and day after you've been doing it with a 57) but gets more squeal-y the more you hear it.

Audix thinline condenser. I can't remember the model but it's the one you get with the basic drum pack. The guy used it mostly for drum overheads but it sounded pretty good pointed towards the bridge from above.

speaking of which, that's another thing to try. Record the acoustic close mic'ed, then three feet away and then six feet away.

Try pointing your 57 at the 12th fret from three inches. Then try it from a 12 inches. Try pointing it towards the bridge from above. you should get a pretty bright sound the closer you get to the bridge.

This is all tracking advice so you're bringing the best possible sound to the mixing stage on your computer.

What software are you using on your machine? Once you get to mixing, there are infinite ways to improve or stylize your tracks. I'm game to share what I know if you want.
