"Choices"

I used the A Designs Audio mp-1 for all vox, acoustic guitars and (2) miced elec. guitar parts...with a dbx compressor as insert, routed through an ART DPS for digital conversion...

Pod XT for the other electric parts... and bass..

this was my very first shot at doing "snapshot Automixing".....
with then roland machines, you can automate the mix.... and i've never really tried to do it before, so this was my trial by fire....

and let me tell you, automix is very cool, UNLESS you've got a tricky mix..which this is....

1st person to spot my automix mistakes (3 blatent ones) wins a brand new Corvette!!

I did manage a couple of good automixed fades........;)

i gotta mix this one over.

...and, i think i was too liberal with the low end eq on mastering.... i only added 1db at 100hz, and 1db at 400hz.....oh yea, and 1db at 14khz...
my bat likes that one... ;)

here's the lyric....

Choices

Standing at the edge of a decision
And a thought has just occurred to me

If I had walked another path
I would have found another destiny

It's so easy to say
If I had another day
To take a different view
If I only knew

That the choices I made
Were the choices I gave

To all the ones in my life
Unnecessary strife

But it will be all right

Ah..... Ah.... Ah.... Ah.....
It's my plan, it's my plan, it's my plan
To find some balance and some kind of peace
Another day, another chance
A different choice that I will see

It's so easy to say
If I had another day
To take a different view
If I only knew

That the choices I made
Were the choices I gave

Wow - this is really nicely done.

I could see a case for a bit of remixing. I'm feeling a little bit of an overall 'hole' in the middle. I think your bass and high end are pretty well defined.

I can't spot the 'automation' errors!! Congrats on your getting into it - something I haven't ventured yet but getting good at using 8 fingers on the faders......

Damn, you just keep putting out great music...

I'm just listening for the sake of the music, not the mix so I wont have any mix comments....

I really like this song.... You have an unusual voice, kinda reminds me of a cross between Jon Anderson of Yes and a bit of Rik Emmett of Triumph....

Nice vocal harmonies too...

Once again another display of killer guitar... I like the clean guitar breaks, they're a good compliment to the heavy guitars....

Thats not that old drum machine is it?... Those are great sounding drums....

Excellent!

:)

This is your best work so far, excellent mix, excellent playing, excellent song, excellent job.

jeffoest-
thanks for listening...
hole in the middle, i feel the same way..
i did an analysis on the overall eq peaks, and it's got a bump at 120hz, a dip at 145hz, a dip at 240hz, a few more peaks and valleys, then it starts to roll off at 1khz....... just slightly, but it's all downhill on the curve.....
when i'm mixing, it sounds plenty mid rangy enough, and even enough high end, but i guess i'm favoring low end heavy recording....
the big trick is how to make it not boomy or muddy....
without just adding a bunch of high end...
i'm still figuring it out......
the automation errors are abrubt dropouts of certain tracks, that should have been gently faded out..... they just chop off! LOL

thanks for the complements! rik emmet, ha, i like rik, when he sings real high , i used to say "that's the voice that can peel paint...."
LOL
you're too king...
yeah, originally, i was going to do this heavy over the top multi guitar part with rectifiers and soldanos (LOL) at the clean break, but then i tried it with the acoustics, and that seemed to make the most sense.....
and that's the same drum machine i've been using, just found a better kit on it.... and spent a little more time programming it........

lynx-
so glad you liked it. i DO still think there's lots of room for improvement....
i'll post the next version of the mix of this, so you can hear the difference.....
hopefully, it'll be better.

thanks everyone.

This is the first song of yours I've heard. It Rocks!. Very cool Guitars in there. The system I'm listening doesn't really allow me to make mix comments. (teeny speakers at work), but I love the song itself.

hey, thanks a lot man!
burn yourself a copy, take it home, and crank it up!
seems to work better louder, and i'm trying so hard to figure out how to mix this so it sounds good at any volume.....
just can't quite figure it out....

That's often a problem for me, too. If you figure it out let me know.
BTW, how's the weather in SLC? I was just there (Provo actually) a month or so ago.

the weather........ ugh.....

we've had inversion in the valley for almost 3 weeks now...
we've not gotten above freezing for all that time....
meanwhile, up the canyons, and above the inversion, it's bluebird beautiful.....
and totally hard-packing the snowpack....
lots of sun crust....
we need a storm, bad.

but, it means more recording time, instead of skiing.....

Most excellent!

Very reminiscent of The Who. 'specially the drums.

Nice!

very very good. The drum programming was superb. Guitar sound is cool as it gets to me. The only thing I didntr care for was hearing so much of the pick when strumming on the acoustic.

MAN, MOON!
ha!
wellllll, i'll take THAT one!
LOL
the drums always are a compromise to me, because of the machine aspect...
i can hear a lot more, than i can program...

thanks for the complements....
and i agree with you about the attack sound on the acoustics....
i used one mic, and it was a close micing, with a MDC, and i really should start playing with the two mic setup, i think i could control that part better, and not get so close to the guitar....
guitars were a combination of pod (the main heavy right/left rhythms) and miced amps......

hey toki

on the issue of the strumming....

which frequency do YOU think would be the one to drop down, to take the edge off that pick attack?
