A bit more "complete" of an attempt

I posted another version of this diddy about a month ago. I made a little more or an attempt at it this time. Mostly, I programmed the drums this time to be a bit more "realistic". Added a little movement to the bass line. Added a guitar solo finally (this proved to be quite an undertaking. Nothing like having to solo over a static 5th of the tonic and then move to a 1-5-1 cadence to finish up and keep it all interesting. I just couldn't find anything that fit any better than repeating what I did earlier in the song for the ending part of the solo).

Please excuse the minor tuning anamolies. I need to sit down and get the instruments all in whack from there rather long break from being played (like a few years!!!), and in some cases, my technique was as much to blame too (pressing a bit too hard on the strings while playing....).

Drums - Fruity Loops

Bass - Ovation bass through J-Station> ART Dual MP

All guitar - J Station S/PDIF out

All recorded/mixed in Sonar. Did a bit of "mastering" in Wavelabs.

Let the rips rip! ;)

Killer tune with Pretty melodic Hook. You got my hopes up at at 1:36 with the harmony guitar on ONE line.:DI was hoping the whole section would be harmony and then break back into the single guitar riff before the end but it was not to be.

Overall a good tune.

Hey,

Solid chops,

The melody grows on ya quickly but, I found myself wanting more of a divergence from the theme. The bass line was solid and very fitting, the drums did the job and the rhythm git was as it should be. Perfect tone IMO for this instrumental. The lead git tracking was what I'm still aspiring to.
Clean and conditioned!

Nice listen,

Theron.

Well Ed, I must say that this mix is actually a little *bigger* than I had expected, and I expected a lot since you're such a big shot :) So congratulations. Very impressive!

The song is totally gay, but you knew I'd say that....hehe

Slackmaster 2000

i don't know what to say. the mix is clear as day, but the drums sound canned, as you would expect i guess. I don't know what you did it for, but it almost sounds right for uhh.. wheres my bandana? my jeans are too loose need some tight white jeans.

This tune stands up well as a suitably cute backdrop for a vocal but not as an instrumental.

I guess the Archies did some instrumentals didn't they?

It appears bluntness is the order of the day....

I'd save up for some better stuff, rather than tarnish your "reputation" with your admittedly out of tune guitars, obviously canned drums, out of date finger tapping, and mediocre mix (from a "pro"). It is nice and clean however...with the exception of all the hiss on the fadeout.

(and it's Wavelab...not the plural("wavelabs")...isn't it?)...have you tried T-racks?:D :p :D

It's "Kumbiah."

Kuum bi aaaaaaah, my lord, kuum bi aaaaaaaaaah...

No shit, w/ Steve Vai.

Sounds great, if not a little to the "right."

1:36-> gets even better...

Kuhm bi aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah....

I keep wanting to hear big band staccato hits in there somewhere...

Drums sound good, except 2:39, which is cheesey to my ears.

Kuuuuuuuum bi aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah my lord, kuuuuuuuuuuuum bi aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

:D

(just joshin' w/ ya, hehe)

I liked the melody.

The mix is nice, but I've heard better from you.

The main thing is the drums. A sound module head like me would NEVER have known that those were canned.

Funk on!

nice song... I was curious to hear what your stuff was going to sound like after reading so many of your posts....I just picked up a J-Station too........I was wondering...I have a Presonus Blue Tube, and do you think I should run my guitar processors through that? Or is that not good enough? I have a J-station, a sansamp GT2, Pod Pro, Digitech 2112, and a KorgG1 distortion processor...

thanks sonusman for any tips you could offer

Okay, Ed, you want words?

I listened to the song more closely, and I came up with words. Here's the deal. At 2.40, the song needs that double barrelled chorus that you put in just the once from 1.04 - 1.36 so everything goes out in a blaze of glory. Simple. Up for it?

dobro, I think I will pass, thanks. The song was only created as an excercise in learning how to use Sonar and Fruity Loops for production. Maybe one day I will take the "song" seriously, but for now, it was just a little idea to throw down to finish a product to guage the potential of the software. I choose this one because the the arrangement was very basic and straight ahead 4/4. This isn't even a style I write in anymore. All the other songs I have in the works though have some "tricky" parts in regards to measure length, and Fruity Loops is not up for the tast in it's "Song" mode (in Song mode, you have to define the global pattern length in measures. ALL patterns in the song must be this length. This is problematic when you want a 2/4 measure inserted in the song...:()

So, while it was a catchy little riff, I am not excited enough about the song itself to pursue arrangement improvements beyond what I did.

Thanks for all the other comments guys.

Oh, and Slack, you are now "gay" because you listened to it. To undo, you have to listen to Pyromania 50 times!!! :D

overall a good song.good composition.catchy licks,my girlfriend would like it and my mom.must have taken a long time to program the drums, get an elec set already,cheapskate...

Actually, I bet I didn't even spend much more than an hour programming the drums. The Fruity Loops interface makes it pretty easy to do when you know how to write drum music. I had more formal training on drums than I did on guitar.

Composing the parts themselves was quick. I spent half that time "randomizing" the velocities and time line of the hits to make it a bit more "human" sounding. I just wish it would allow you to create patterns that are varying in length, then combine them into a "song", like just about ANY drum machine would allow you to do....

Wish I COULD afford a V Kit, just so I could actually "play" the parts into a sequencer. Would at least give me some good excecise eh? :)

Ed

You know Ed,

I was thinking the same thing.... Im tired of programming my Drums into the drum machine bar by bar and then arranging it all into a song, it would be nice to just have a few pads to play it out into a sequencer...

Those V Series Kits are pricey... maybe even one of the "KAT" things might work....

I don't really need a whole kit... I only use the snare and bass, for samples.. the rest is live cymbals and hats..

"dobro, I think I will pass, thanks."

Yeah, yeah, well you can pass and I forgive your lack of curiosity, but I'm fired and the ball's in my court now. Expect a return.

And if the song turns out not to be all it could, well all you have to do is redo it with that chorus at the end... :D

You're a fundamental disappointment to me, Eddie Rei. And a big girl's blouse.

What does an mp3 of an mp3 sound like, BTW?

Pretty Funny. :D

Ed - That sounds great. Not being the musician myself, I need to see what I can do one of these days. I've done a couple things in the past, but nothing recent or for that matter descent. I guess I am too busy recording other people. Someday though... :(

ed, i haven't listened to the song yet, got a few downloads going.

yeah, try a kat pad or something. that way you will have a little easier time programming velocity infor for your snare drums or whatever.

look forward to hearing the track soon.

Romesh

ed, out of humour, you should make a t-racks mix. compress the shit out of it, stick up all the hi's and bass and cut all the mids. it'll sound killer then....
