a bit confused about control surfaces

I have a question about using control surfaces with softwar. I know that a mixer is used in the recording chain before the computer to record multiple tracks.

Does a control surface (such as the digi002)) allow you to manipulate the tracks once they are recorded into the computer? That seem like a good way to work. If so does this control surface method work better than just using a mouse to control tracks?

Finally i know that the digi002 works with pro tools. Are there control surfaces that will control the tracks of other software like sonar?

Thanks again (this forum is awsome)

Mackie Control Universal

And more, also, I just can't think of any right now.

minofifa... you've got the right idea about control surfaces. A lot of them have motorized faders so you can automate you're mixes... It sure does beat using a mouse. The Mackie control is a wonderful unit and works fine with Sonar.

Good luck.

does the control surface work better than a mouse for controlling the tracks<

From what I've read as I've been looking towards a control surface myself (Mackie Control Universal), at first you will find yourself still reaching for the mouse, but once you quit the habbit you'll wonder how you ever relied so much on the mouse and never got the control surface sooner- just like Dual Monitors- how do you live without them, and broadband internet.

And once you're on them you can never go back...

ya i checked out the mackie universal, it's pretty cool but a little pricy.
What does it mean to automate the mix? Say half way through a song will the faders hove to different spots if you program them to? How was it done before automics were used? did the sound techs just move them when it sounded like it was time to?

You won't find them much cheaper than that. The baby hui (also mackie) is cheaper but much smaller and has less features.

Before automation, people WERE the automatons. You did a mix...moving faders when you wanted... and practiced a few times...then you put it on tape. You did it right, or not. And you couldnt really do as complex mixes on you own...so you brought in some assistants, and said.."after the first chorus, mute traks 3,4,5,6 and 7...and pan track 8 to the left" or something. Then you had 6 hands working the board at once, in a smooth, organized dance.
