What are the better compressors for under $100 bucks? Need at least 2 channels. I'm planning on using it for drums / vox. Any ideas? Looking at the cheap behringer, but I hate that company...

Save a few more bucks and get a RNC. Or you might get lucky and get a used one for around $100.

Under a $100 bucks is pretty tough. What about one of those Alesis NanoCompressor thingies? You also may be able to find an old DBX 116, 117, 118, or 119 for that. I think those are the model numbers, at least a couple of those will be compressors!
But in the sub $100 range you might be better off going with plugins. I think the stock plugins that came with Digital Performer sound better than any of the sub $100 compressors I've heard. If you want a trashy sound, or an effect type compressor, then a sub $100 unit could work out really well. But if you are loking for something that works cleanly and unobtrusively, then you might want to go with plugins.

I've heard good things of the DBX 266XL, and if you look, you can find one for about 110.00 used, but i have zero experience with them. I'm kind of in the same position at this point, but I'm willing to shell out a few extra bucks.

I was looking on ebay for some dbx 266 compressors or whatever they are called. I think I might be able to pick one off for about 100, but who knows. There are a lot of cheaper ones but like everyone has said, it might just make things sound worse. I figure it is necessary if i want to record bass / drums / vox. Without one, the mixing would take forever...

Well, David Bowie's long time producer says he uses a Behringer compressor. I have a RNC and Fatman and often choose my Behringer over them both, expecially for drums. While reading "Behind The Glass" some other big wig producer (can't remember name) said it doesn't matter, a cheap compressor does the same thing as an expensive compressor and that you can get good results with all of them. Seems Bowie's producer agrees! I've found that just about every piece of modern cheap gear has it's pro supporters so I don't think you can go wrong with any cheap "name" brand.
