Hi Tim: Thanks! Coming from you, I take this a big compliment. Your recordings are as good as they get IMO. I am using my 1938 kalamazoo guitar, with 2 year old strings on it. I use my fingers only. The mics all went through the EH 12AY7 pre amps. i also did some different final mastering, via samplitude classic V8. Walter

THe mics were:

AKG C414 TL II -vocals/harp
AKG C414 B-ULS - about 8 inches off the guitar, between the bridge and end of guitar-panned right
Oktava M-012- about 6 inches off the neck, around the 10th fret-panned left

These 2 mics were lightly mixed:
RODENT1A- behind my right shoulder, about ear high, panned full left
Oktave M-012 - in front of me about 6 feet, and 6 feet in the air, centered in the room, panned full right.

Walter, I can't keep up with ya man!!!!! I won't even comment on individual songs this time...as I am still listening. I will say, very nice. This is some of the coolest stuff to date. I sure appreciate you sharing it with us. Well done. Anyone into the blues, should listen to your stuff. There is something for everyone. I always get visions when I hear your music.....swamps, water, food, whatever. You leave a mark....a really cool mark.....

Thank you dogman for you support! Making up the words and music, as I go along, takes me into the story. Like you said, I also go on a journey into it. That is what is so addicting/satifying/never a dull moment, with this approach, over a traditional approach-write, put to music, rehearse, record, perform.

rayc: Thanks for the connection to TJW. I did a benifit for tornado victums in Tx, that he and waylon jennings organized. It was just him and his guitar, for his set. Niel young, los lobos, waylon, and the other bands were good, but IMO, TJW stole the show. He has always moved me. I love to play with a wah wah pedal, but can't do it in the 1 man band set up, because my feet are working the drums and high hat. With my trio, I use it alot. Earl Hooker is another wah wah hero of mine. Walter

TJW's solo set are amazing aren't they. I LOVE the old vid of him doing Soul Francisco etc al fresco. He really know's his oats & notes.
There's a good Warner's Masters/Archive CD of him I bought last year - a real trawl through his early stuff - soooo good.
Would you mind pointing me to any of your posted songs that are wah'd? I'd love to listen in to all but would be particularly keen on these.

I know you mentioned you record pretty much all at once. What I mean is how do you get the tone of the harp (slightly distorted) as compared to the nice clean vocals? Special mic placements? However it's done it worked well....Lyrics were cool too - lonely musicians (aren't we sometimes though?) Thanks for the great tune - looking forward to the set up info....

hi idol1957: Thanks for the listen, and I am glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I make up all my words and music as I go along, thus the name -Spontobeat. Everything is live, just as you hear, is how I played it. No overdubs, just the same sound, set up, you would see me live with. I use a AKG C414 TLII for the vocal and harp. That "distortion" you hear, is just my natural, acoustic harp tone I guess. My studio is 10' x 20', the bass drum and snare drum are worked by my left foot, via a modified double kick pedal, the high hat with my right foot, the guitar goes through a deluxe reverb, with a thd hotplate set to the lowest setting(about acoustic guitar level), and I use hohner marine band harps, in a harp rack. They are stock out of the box. All this gear is within 2 feet of me, so there is bleeding. I don't play loud. I gave that up decades ago. I hope that explains things, if not let me know. TJW is a gem. He reminds of a white version of lightning hopkins. You could burn alot of time looking through my song list. I know, because I just did, in search of a song with wah wah. I found out there isn't one. I have them on cassette, but not cd. I will have to do some next time I get together with my band to record. Walter
