A Bass Drum Tunnel?

Okay so I've heard of the idea of making a bass drum tunnel before. (to help isolate the bass drum sound.) However, someone suggested to me that an exellent way to do this is by using another bass drum. He suggested to buy like a really cheap used one, remove both the heads. Make sure it's hollow with no blankets or pillows, and then rig up your mic to it. When you go to record bands, just place the crappy bass drum in front of the other bass drum creating a tunnel. First off, is this gonna work? I mean it sounds cool, but you don't ever see professional studios doing it, so I'm just wondering. And secondly, should you dampen the "tunnel" by adding cloth or other absorbants to the walls? Would it sound better if you kept one head on the back of the "tunnel"? Or should you just leave it the way it is? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Once you've built one, it's just trial and error. So try dampening it etc, you decide. You will never replicate the results of somebody else as the kick drum will be different, heads will be differant, room will be differnt, hell! even the temprature will be different.

So experiment and see what sounds nice, it's the only way.

:D Well written! ...and true. ;)

(muttering under breath).......Stupid sodding keyboard............spelling 'different' differently every time........keyboard thinks its so clever......crap........

i've made tunnels from all kinds of things. typically i resort to:

1.) pushing two loveseats on either side of the kick and covering the top with pillows/blankets. then you get to crawl in your little tunnel and play with placement.

2.) then, i usually throw an audix d4 or d6 ined up with the res head, pointed at the beater to catch snap. then a LDC at the end of the tunnel.

3.) then i use drumagog to replace 100% of the sounds i got... j/k

haha. just use steps 1 & 2 above... see if it floats your boat. the room obviously has a huge amount to do with it. some rooms i've seen people tracking in aren't even big enough to fit a loveseat in, much less a LOVESEAT TUNNEL!!!!!
