Whats the deal?? I recorded a 5 song demo for some friends all at 96khz just to find out that after its all mixed down, I couldnt even burn it to a CD without converting it back to 44.1khz. Is that normal?

Yup, Normal cd's are 16 bit 44.1kHz.

People like to mix/master at 96 or even 196 to really listen to the detail that you couldn't hear at 44.1.

The deal is that if you record, mix and master at higher resolutions - in this case, having a higher sampling rate = more samples per second, you will have a significantly better sound when it comes time to convert it down to 16 bit / 44.1 k.

If the weak link in the recording chain is at the front end, nothing you do later will improve it. If the weak link is at the very end - the CD medium itself - there is no additive effect at work. Better sound.
