Hey everybody...I have a $900 budget to get myself a nice condenser, audio interface/soundcard, and a mic preamp for my studio..

Now im wondering if you guys have any ideas on how to maximize the benefit from what im spending..I'm mainly recording rnb/pop and rap vocals..

Also i was wondering if I should spend extra on a interface or spend extra on the preamp or spend extra on the mic...which way would you go.

Thanks a lot for your inputs !

Hi.Whats the rest of your studio like ? Do you have acoustic baffling behind your current mic or a soundbooth ?

I recommend getting an interface with the preamps built in. Then getting a nice mic ( or two ) that you have trialled in a store. What works for R'n'B and especially on a female vocal may not work for your male vocal. I am thinking a tube mic for that silky sound but that may not translate so well for in your face Rap delivery.

Rode mics have a sound treatment promotion until the end of September and Rode mics are pretty good. I think you have to purchase one of their higher mid range mics to get the deal.

Hm that's true.. are there any reccomendations for what interface i can get with built in preamps?

Firewire or USB ? Keep in mind that USB2 is sufficient for recording single instruments ( ie the claimed reduced latency of firewire wont be any different to USB2 unless recording a lot of intruments at once ).

What are your preferences ? What software do you use or prefer ?

Some interfaces offer DAWS as part of the software bundle, others offer Softsynths and samples.

I keep recommending Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1, the current promotion offers a high end sampler of a New York grand piano.

Download their totally free teaser package to see if the sound and workflow of Native Instruments appeals to you :)

Firewire..and im open to either sonar or pro tools..mainly recording vocals..rnbish.pop..i was leaning towards a nice tube mic .. it doesn't have to be a package with DAW..the hardware is priority..i can last on free DAW's for that matter llol
