I am going to be purchasing an 880ex or 890 in the very near future, but am wondering about the difference in the converters(880 20bit, 890 24 bit.)Since I am mastering down to a phillips stand alone unit(16 bit), are the extra bits going to cause noise? Does anyone know if either the 880ex or the new 890 have a dithering tool or effect?

Both the VS-880EX(version 2.00 or greater)and the 890 have dither. It's in the MTK(Mastering Tool Kit) FX patches.I've never worked on an 890,but I'm pretty sure that the only time you might notice some weirdness would be in burning a CD from the 890's MT Pro mode, and then, probably only if you don't dither, because this mode is like the MT Pro mode on the VS-1680;it's compressed 24 bit resolution.ALL other Recording modes on both machines are 16 bit resolution, regardless of the resolution of the A/D converters,so once your audio is safely ensconced in a V track,it should translate well to your burner using all these modes(MAS,MT1,MT2).By the way, there is a very good, easy to understand article about dither in the current issue of KEYBOARD mag.(green cover) Cheers!

Sorry to say, but "you're wrong" Ray.

Please read the technical data in the back of your book again.
Internal processing of all sound is done at 24 bits. Even if AD/DA convertors on VS880EX are 20 bit. The convertors in 890 are 24 bit AD/DA convertors.

The Mass, MT1 & MT2 modes decide wich resolution is used. Similar to a computerscreen, a higher resolution will use more memory. Hertz and kilo-Hertz are not he same as bits.

There is no digital compression used anywere in VS recorders. That is happening in the brand called "Fostex".

The VS recorder will recreate an image at 16 bit to burn a CD right from the VS recorders.

The 16 bit you are referring to applies to the mixer, where the potmeters can be adjusted at 16 bit. It has nothing to do with the Audio processing wich is happening at 24 bit everywhere.

To have dither? What is that?
Dithering means recalculating the whole scope in order to work at the same quality.

I hope you can accept my anwser.
I presumed this board should be informative.

To Buuny Funk,
The VS890 will need more storage place for Audio tracks, compared to the VS880EX. Theoreticly the sound should be better after coming in on 24 bit AD/DA convertors.
I haven't had a chance to hear this difference.
Because your ears can only understand frequencies in between 20 and 20.000 Hz, and a normal CD does that at 16 bit already, there seems to be no rational reason to use anymore bits for reproducing two tracks.
Musical regards,(my 2 cents)

Hi! I wasn't talking about the internal processing. The recorded data in MAS mode is stored as 16 bit words.Cheers!
