my main reason for the burner is uploading mp3's for distribution to several music sites. What do i really need? $1000 burner or a $550 unit? Any help would be great thanks
Hi lustre-
Hey, I just bought a Philips CDR775 today, as a matter of fact. I couldn't justify the extra bucks (neither could the wife) for a more expensive deck. I was concerned about having to use the Audio only discs, but I read on a bulletin board somewhere that regular data discs work just fine.
Added bonus: All the specs I researched said that unfinalized CDRW would not play in the non record side, but when I opened it up, the quick start guide says that it will! Cool...
Plus, I got mine at Circuit City, just drove across town and picked it up. Everyday sale price...$449.99...just over $475 with tax.
I can't wait 'til tomorrow morning to fire this baby up!

ok a bit of mis-info. I own a phillips CDR-870 You can use regular data disks but.....you have to fool the machine first. Here is how.
1. Put in an audio disk and let it read it.
2. Open the drawer manually very slowly.
3. Place a regular Data disk in and slowly close it back.
4. Whala the machine thinks that it is recording on an audio disk.
The reason that they do that is because royalties are just like cassetee tapes. A certain % goes to the recording industry.
To my knowledge you cant record data with the phillips cdr's only audio. If someone has sucessfully burned software on them let me know.
Also about being able to play an unfinalized disk you can play it in the phillips itself but not in any other standard cd player.
Cool otter, that was my understanding. Thanks so much for the easy to DIY instructions. By manually, I guess you mean gently tug on it 'til it pops open? <Learning curve mode off>]

Thanks a lot guys! This means I can spend my money on a burner AND speakers. Who would have thought...... By the way, I'm savings your tips before phillips see's them and takes out this site too.
Well before you get all slap happy I forgot to mention a few downfalls.
1. I heard that on the newer machines they were going to make them read a second time before recording which would make this process not work
2. You have to do all of your burning right then. If you take out a data disk without finalizing it first the disk will be shot.
3. I do not even use data disks very often anymore because I found audio disks from best buy for like a 1.20 each. I would rather pay the extra 20 cents and be able to build on a disk and not be forced to finalize a disk with only 1 or 2 songs on it.
The only time I use data disks now is if I am burning personal comp cd's to go in my car or something. I picked up my CDR-870 for 200 bucks used.
I hope that helped you further.
It did, and I found that stuff out while you were asleep, I guess. (moving kinda has made me the insomniac at this Planet).
Thanks for all the info, big guy.
P.S. After one day of fartin' around with the 775, the early results:
I also have a phillips burner, and was a little bummes about the higher priced audio disks- until I found them at Sams Club for about 1.30 a peice. That is a great price compared to the 4 bucks I was paying 3 months ago!
