Jeez, I just wrote a long post and it wouldn't display.

Better be brief this time.

Tascam 788 users post mp3 links as replies to this post.

BPF,
Wondered where you went to, maybe this could be a spot to post mp3 sites for 788 users. My posted stuff is at mp3.com, just type in John Malcolm Penn to the search engine. Most was done on the 788. Most is throw away material, but I'm always up for opinions as to the mix and use of on board effects.

hey Phil...good to hear from you...you know, I only posted one mp3 in 6 months, never used profanity, but Pat e-mailed me and said that because I was saying so many bad things about the 788, it was slanderous and he kicked me off. Go figure!

Anyway, I love my 788...ALOT! But I feel like an enabler sometimes-- it's such a dysfucntional little "f"er.

I lost tons of data sending my machine in....and then Pat said I should expcet this much...and, oh, by the way, wanna pay $30 to learn how to use it? But I know how to use it and I love it.

If you can sneakily suggest on the forum the search that got you here, it would be a good place to start again. But jeeez, Pat has it all wrong about endorsing links...that just isn't so.

I'm not sure what Tascam is up to. To me, the whole point of this mp3 thing is to improve the product (our recordings), and much of that directly relates to the 788 and the mixing and effects process. Without access to other's audio files how can you reference that. For instance, the last group of songs I finished finally today were mixed with reverbs and delays that had greatly different perameters than what I've used before from the 788's effects. The reason being that I now realize that a lot more can be tweaked from the effects than I first thought and become very effective. The fact that I can't share this stuff with other 788 users after over a 1000 hours of recording time on this machine is just plain stupid.

Yeah, I really have to believe they are just really weak at TASCAM...really disappointing that it is a company like that....nuff said...

...did you get me e-mail about your songs...man...I just loved them. I can't really give you any good feedback with regard to mix and eq because I think they were all just amazing. I've got to get an actual copy of the cd...e-mail or let me know somehow how to get a copy to play in my home stereo and in my rig (my new suv...brag brag)

What state are you in? Do you perfrom live? I would love to see you play. I'm up and down the West Coast and I'm planning a trip to the south with my g/f in January. Where can I catch a show?

BPF,
I'll email you about all that stuff. glad you like the tunes.

All four of these songs on my site were completly recorded on my 788. I wrote, played and recorded everything myself. I do wish that they would have a specific place to post for 788 users. It is really helpful to go over recordings with others.

all of me

Is this a mix straight from the 788? And how 'bout a rundown on the effects your using.

Heard a couple of vocal plosives early on but the mix is pretty dang good.

Yes, the mix is straight from the 788. The vocal effects and acoustic guitar effects are straight from the reverb on the 788. The only extra effects I used is from my Digitech GSP-2101 for my electric guitar. For the most part 1 vocal has effects panned hard left and the other is clean panned right. I used the reverb in the 788 also on the drums over the ride and or high-hat. The bass is recorded direct, also using the 788 for it's effect. Needless to say I do love my 788. I haven't really had much trouble with it.

I'm going there now...just wanted to say first: Hey! This is the place to post 788 mp3's....eventually everyone will find there way here!

All of Me,
Thanks for the info.

There's a couple of schools of thought on effect panning that I know of, one is that panning track effects away from the track can inhance depth and create more of a stereo effect from a mono track, the downside is that it can make it muddy. So, the more tracks you have the messier it can get.

When I'm paying attention (which isn't often) I'll take an eight track song and pan the track effects right along the location of track panning, but if it's just a vocal and a couple of instruments then I'll sweep the effects clear to the other side.

Which reverbs are you using and how much reverb time?

All Of Me:

I think "Revolver" is a good tune. Reminds me of "Pennyroyal Tea," or "Something In The Way," by you-know-who, and is equally catchy like those two songs.

I like the way you approached the recording of the vocals. I don't know HOW you approached the recording of the vocals, but I like it, none-the-less.

The guitar parts are good but performed a little rough around the edges. Rough-and-the-edges is a good approach for this type of song and the emotion and lyrical content behind it, but still, it just seems like stronger performances on guitar would make the song much better. If you don't want to do that, though, I would definately tweak the guitar track(s). You could do this without re-recording. Relative to the strong vocal recording and performance, the sound of the guitar is actually quite weak. That's meant in the most positive way it could be meant because, like I said, you could keep the part and work with the production you already have.

The eq on the guitar(s) seems okay to my ears. Maybe you could:

1. cheat: clone the track, or, copy and paste it very slightly off the original. Pan it around in different ways until it comes through better, fuller. With the vocal as strong as it is, I don't think filling up the track (to some degree) with guitar would steal from the vocals.

2. double the guitar: or, triple the guitar, using different voicings on each take so as not to muddy up what you've got. Where you're playing one part in first position, play a second part up the fretboard, boost the original down the center and pan in stereo the second part.

I would have liked to hear an erie cello come in very slightly, way in the back, but that's neither here nor there.

It sounds a little like I'm suggesting you jack the whole thing up into a muddy mess. I am guilty of doing that in my songs. But that is not what I envision in order to fix what I think the song lacks.

I think it is a cool, dark song and it should stay that way. I was just a little disappointed in the "distant" guitar.

Nice work!

WOW, awesome feedback. I agree with the both of ya. I felt that the guitar track was not full enough on the song. I am still very much learning to record with my 788. (IN ME AGAIN) and (FUNNY HOW THE MIND GROWS) were actually the first 2 full songs I recorded on my 788. I do have about 4-5 new ones that should stretch my horizons, along with a little more t.l.c. on the original 4 tracks and I should have a complete album. As far as how much or the settings on the reverb I will have to check all that out on my machine. thanks for all your feedback!

I'm a little backed up right now but I'll try to listen to the rest of your tunes soon. Any idea why real player overrides my regular one when I click on your mp3.com site? I'm there too (John Malcolm Penn) and it doesn't do it to me.

I don't know why it does that, I am new to the whole mp3.com thing. I'll check out your site though.

THE OSAMA WALTZ
ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Yeah, John, explain to us why that song isn't the novelty radio hit of the year? What's that, you say? You never sent it to radio or any company? Mmm hmmm, that's what I thought.

Just giving you a hard time...

I know everbody I played it for thought it was sooooooooo funny and so right on!!!!!!!

Well, folks, there's just a few of us in here, but give it time. If anyone has tech questions about the 788, you ought to go ahead and post them here, too.

I've been reading the 'other' forum....you know, the repressive, weak & scared, censoring one? I've caught a few clues people are dropping to get people to their mp3's. I've e-mailed a few of them through the mp3 contact but haven't seen them here yet (I thought Bryan Wilson would show up quick-- he was a great mp3 contributer and listened to other people's mp3's as well....no sign of him yet. Also no sign of trouble-maker --just kidding-- Dave In Jersey, either. He started the whole thing over at TASCAM.com after all---hehehe).

Anyway...I'm gonna look into having an all inclusive site. I'm willing to pay for the site, I'm just trying to find a simple way to set it up so as to avoid the cost of a Webmaster. An independent musician thing--- forum, advice, links, mp3's, that sort of thing...meanwhile, it seems like this forum is a good start.

Put it in your "favorites" and submit your mp3's folks.

Yes, that is a great idea and I know that a lot of people at that (other) site really would appreciate having a place for feedback.
