I've followed all the manual directions to the letter. My trim is turned almost all of the way to Mic. I'm recording vocals using a direct line in with a Shure 58 and accoustic guitar with a Dean Markley pick-up. When I record the premaster I have to turn the stereo fader all of the way up. All seems fine until I burn the CD. I have to crank the stereo to hear anything. When I remix and turn up the gain I distort. How dumb am I and can anyone help me?

if this helps.........I use a sm57 sometimes, thru an outboard preamp, and have to tone the levels down some. :D

What studge said.

You can get many different little pres for small amounts of money. I use a presonus blue tube (150.00 when I purchased it), but there's lots better for the same monies. Try one. You'll like it.

Laurieanna,

The built-in pres in the 788 are by far the weakest element. By the time they are raised to "mic" level, they are worthless in terms of noise, let alone volume.

I use a DBX 286A pre. It is mono, clean, quiet, and has gate/compressor/others, balanced ins/outs, $150 or so. One rack unit, built for touring, great for home use. Cleans up the input of the 788 just like that.

Best,

CC
