You got it, this is something that came up and I just happen to be at this cross road in my studio construction. Due to the age of my home, (50yrs) the duck work is a nightmare and I've got alot to frame around.
Prep, thus far my practice has been to cut up all my 5/8 drywall and run it between the 2x8's, add 6" roxul and vapour barrier.
I'm not hanging a double studded double drywall ceiling on springs. I'm looking for the best ceiling tile I can get for my purpose. The more obtainable the better, I'm in Ontario Canada.

I'm hot on the idea of using 703 as my tiles. the cheap ceiling tiles I priced are only roughly $.10 per square foot than 703. That's not bad considering the quality difference.

The room is a L shape with about 180 square feet to cover.

The floor will be hard, laminate flooring.

Any comments on a Roxul sub. for 703 would be highly appreciated.

Yo bileshake:

As far as Acoustic absorption specs go, Roxul Safe n Sound is pretty close to 703, but not nearly as rigid. You can checkout all the specs here:

I too am in Ontario and I found a great equivalent product in the Ottawa Fibres line of stuff. OFI-48 is very similar to 703, both in rigidity (it's also 3 pcf) and in terms of absorption. It is available through GLASS CELL ISOFAB:

Their locations are here:

It is rather pricey though...I got a pack of 4 for right around $50 if I remember correctly, though I could be wrong about that...

thanks milkman, I'll shop around those places ad see what I can find.

Roxul has an actual rigid fiberglass as well, it's called the RHF series.

SIDE NOTE: ROXUL HAS TWO IDENTICAL PRODUCTS IN DIFFERENT BAGS!!! SAFE AND SOUND IS THE SAME AS FLEXBATT BUT COSTS MORE!!! This info came direct from a Roxul employee. The difference is some kind of fire insurance plan that Safe and Sound carries when used on an ENTIRE house.

Do you already have existing ceiling tiles as a ceiling, or are you planning on making a ceiling tile system?

My entire ceiling is cloth covered RHF and it worked great.

If you like some ideas on this subject e-mail me

I'm creating the ceiling from scratch. I've got all the rails and such just waiting to find the right product.
Thanks to milkman I found a shop an hour away where I can get Ottawa Fibre rigid (same density as 703) cash and carry. It's got foil on one side, I'm planning to paint the foil and hang it up. It's about $.95 per square ft which is about the same as acoustic tile.

errrrr, when you say you're gonna paint the foil side I'm assuming that you'll be facing that side out. Won't that be reflective?

Also, make sure you check the co-efficients on the product. The same density doesn't neccessarily mean it's going to perform the same. I'm not saying it's not, but check.

Hey bileshake,

Glad it's working out for you. There also should be an option to get it unfoiled...that's what they offered me.

Milkman

Yeah paint the foil, I might have other options when I get to the supplier and see what they've got. Maybe I've leave the and hang some rope lights and mic cable across the ceiling and it look like a room inside the shuttle. haha

I've been at this damn room for two years and finally it's close to seeing equipment. I just gotta get the damn thing together. The beauty of the drop ceiling is I can just take the tiles down, flip em and cover them nice when I have more time and money. I'm outta time, two solid weeks of summer holidays shot. No vocals laid, no mixing done, just bloody carpentry and shopping for materials.

Yes I did get the OFI-48 without the foil and covered it with cloth. I love it and I'm goin to get some more to tame some wall to wall reflections in the room.
