Hi,

I'm still having problems!

My system....1gig Thunderbird, 512Mb Ram, 14.2gig C drive, 80gig D drive slaved to Cdrive, XP.

I record when my system lets me and I'm getting fed up with it. It really screws any inspiration one has.

Questions:

1. Should I still follow the "Optimizing Windows 98 for recording" checklist even with my beefy system? I'm really getting about the same results I was when I had 366Hz, 64Mb and Windows 98.

2. How do I use Crl/Alt/Delete in XP? It's a whole different look. I never have primary programs running when I'm tracking but on the "processes tab" there is background stuff running and Systray and Explorer aren't named as such. Even though there seems to be little CPU usage should I close this stuff?

3. Should I try a dual boot kind of thing? I'm really "fuzzy" on just what this is and how to set it up.

I WANT SOME FREAKING STABILITY ....HELP!

Thanks,
Rusty K

I would reinstall Win98SE. It seems to work great on my system and I have about what you have. 1.1 gig, 40 gigHD, 256 Ram and I have some really good stability and speed. Just a thought.

Hey again,

I'm having a better day today but still "tweaking". I realized I probably posted these questions to the wrong forum so I will try again.

I do have some suggestions for this site after two years experience here but I will share those at a later time.

Thanks as always,

Advise such as where to place certain items?
Hi Rusty
This past summer I got another PC.Went from a PIII 600 w/256 sdram to Anthlon 1700+ w/512 ddram (both systems w98se).I didn't do the recommended audio tweaks (enable DMA etc.) and I didn't need to.For the first time ever,my system records flawlessly with any software I use.In my case,I believe it a matter of finally having enough "horsepower" to accomplish all the tasks I was asking my PC to do (like 10X10 simultanious full duplex). Before, even with all tweaks done,I would sometimes get good function and sometimes clicks and pops.No more though. It's happy days now and I am actually recording regularly instead of tweaking and cursing!

Hey Tom,

Yeah my system should be able to handle whatever but it's so cantankerous. The only thing I haven't upgraded is my motherboard, Mainboard EPoX 8kTA3. Some of it may be that I still don't have XP set up just right. I really need someone experienced with XP.

Take it easy and have fun tracking.

I tried the checklist on my 98se and it crashed, some of those things were for win 95 and can make things much worse. Im only running 200 mhz mmx and I can get about 6 tracks with simple efx processing, but it doesn't lock up at all, it gets a little chunky when I peg the cpu to 114% though. Ive heard of lots of problems with XP and audio.

I ran my first ntrack on an old 200mhz mmx. I had win95 and it never crashed. Like you said I could only do about 5 or 6 tracks though.
Now with my new system 1.1 gig celeron 256 meg win 98se Ive got up to 40 with plenty of power to do more with effects to boot.
