Hi all,
This is an old 60's gospel song I found in a book about 15 years ago.
I always liked the melody and words, and finally got the chance to record it.

My monitoring system is a Radio Shack amp,and an old stereo,so any suggestions at all on the mix would be greatly appreciated.
I still have it on the recorder so I can make any changes.

You have to excuse my voice,I smoke like a fiend!:D

Here's the link-

Thanks,
Pete

Thanks man,I enjoyed that.I think your voice sounds just fine even with the nicotine covered vocal cords.:-)

Good tune.I needed something uplifting today.:)

nice tune, in a smooth delivery but with a dynamically squashed, compressed, sort of recording...

throw away the smokes, dude:(

rbw87,
Thanks very much for the comments,I really appreciate it.

mixmkr,
Thanks again for your input, always appreciated.

I'm kind of inexperienced using the digital eq and compression on my DAW,never had them before.
Do you think it's overcompressed?
How about the eq,too much?

Your right about the smokes,I would really like to drop them,to stressed though!

Thanks again,
Pete

Gave it a whirl, Pete...

The first thing I noticed is the slide work.
It sounded great. Very haunty, placed well in the mix.

The vocals sounded a little mumbly, buried in the mix.

The song sounded..well..15 years old.
But you warned us about that already.

Very nice tune, though..thanks!
Praise God!

"Jesus"..catchy title..heheheh..

:D

Village Idiot,
Thanks very much for your thoughts,I appreciate it.
I dig the title too!

CyanJaguar,
I'm really glad you liked it,thanks for saying so.

Anybody have any suggestions for improving my vocal sound?
(Besides calling the Acme vocal company and seeing if they can send me a new one.)
Although,mabey that ain't such a bad idea!

Thanks,
Pete

even two weeks without smoking will produce a noticeable improvement in any vocal sound.

Then maybe the preamp, converters and space.

Its quite a good vocal channel as is though.

CyanJaguar,
Thanks again for your input.
I'm waiting on the RNMP to come out.
Right now I'm using a DBX mini pre, pretty decent for the money though.
And someday a set of Apogees!

I really appreciate everybodys comments and honesty, the more everyone critiques and tears up the mix,the more it helps.
(Although I have to admit,it's REALLY nice when someone says something good about it!)

Thanks very much,
Pete

Pete,

Great job, imho. The instruments are smooth as glass, tastey slide sounds. Nice!

I like the whole song very much. Thanks for posting it.

TomD,
Thanks very much for listening,I'm really glad you liked it,I always enjoy your stuff very much(love that steel!)

Axe4Yahweh,
Back at you bro, thanks for listening.
I just downloaded one of your songs, well I'm downloading it,my server takes about a half an hour to come through!
Finally there it is,Jesus Christ is King.
Cool song, you definatly have that rockin sound goin on!
I liked your guitar playing and singing.
Keep it up.

Thanks,
Pete

your 2nd link didn't work for me...so I went to your original post, figuring you replaced the tune with your new update.

I'm going from memory, but it appears you have a wider stereo spread than your original version. I think your vocal delivery/recording, being so smooth and low in dynamics, might have contributed to what I might have been originally hearing also. This appears to be an improvement (and you better not tell me it is the SAME version...or I'll reach thru the monitor and slap you!!)

this is a good rendition....if you could "improve" the drums, I'd go for that too. Watch the ending there too...a little sloppy.

mixmkr,
Thanks again for listening,I don't know what happened with the link, but here it is again,

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/4/1317/singles.shtml

It's definatly not the original version,I deleted it.

How do you think I could improve the drums?
Their canned,I don't care for the kick sound.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

Now...first off, I have no problems with canned drums...none what so ever. I use them 90% of the time myself too. However, I usually like to try and make them sound bigger...realistic dynamics, but the sound doesn't bother me really. The vibe is more important to me than the sound. Now...in this song, I don't suppose John Bonhom 'huge' drums are what is called for, but I think there might be some other things to do. ...and it probably all depends on what you've got available, etc. If you are able to separate the drums on different tracks (and there are several ways to do this, even if you only have a stereo out), that would be a start. That way, you could process the individual drums without effecting the entire set. With your current drums, I would personally like the hear the high hat lower in volume, and maybe a tad more sizzle. Additionally, maybe a little more 'snap' in the snare, and it could have its own dedicated reverb. The same with the bass. If you have the capabilities, you can even pitch change the drums to suit the song better too...like lowering the sound of the toms, bass drum...whatever. You can even get into multiple drums sounds (like the kick or snare)having more than one sound hitting at the same time. ...like combining a deep kick sound with one that has more of a punch to it, to get the combined effects. Not saying to do that for THIS song, but as an example. My main gripes are the hh volume, snare sound, which could be *fixed* with EQ, reverb, and possibly more interesting tom fills. ... just some ideas off the top of the ole noggin'...

mixmkr,
Thanks again for the help.
I have 4 outs on my drum machine,I put the kick on one, snare on the other, and the hh,cymbals and toms on a stereo track.

I'm going to start remixing tonight,I want to give the vocals another shot, fix the ending and work on the drums.
Your advice has been very helpful, thanks.

I have to ask a dumb question,if I take one of the outputs on my drum machine, pan several instruments in differant locations,is there a way I can record it and have the pan locations stay intact, and not come out in mono?
On my recorder I can link 2 channels for stereo recording, will this do it?
I havn't tried,so I thought I would ask.

Thanks,
Pete

No, unless I interprete your question wrong. You need stereo for panning....of course...right? so...two outs on the drum machine into two inputs on the recording side.

next question, what are you recording on....? can you dump your drums in separate passes, and then line them (drag)back up together again? In other words, you could separate your toms and your hh/cymbals on TWO stereo tracks, with the bass and snare each on their own tracks....giving you even more control over the drums. (just mute the unwanted drums on playback when recording them..and it would take two passes at recording drums now. One pass you lay down bass, snare and stereo cymbals. 2nd pass, you lay down stereo toms). You can do this very easily on the computer, and its one of the ways I elluded to, in separating your drum tracks from one another.

mixmkr,

Man your quick!

I kind of figured it couldn't be done with one output.

I'm not recording on a computer,it's a dedicated workstation.
I have the drum machine synced via midi clock, chasing the workstation.

Never thought of muting the unwanted instruments and making two passes, great idea!

I'm going to go up and try it right now.

Thanks again,
Pete
