6' x 12' control room treatment?

Hey guys,

I wanted to get your opinions on treatment for our control room since we've got to use it for mixing as well. Currently it's set up almost exactly like the "Bedroom Studio" from the SAE webiste:

With the following exception.

1) My windows is on the opposite wall (bottom of drawing). It's 4'x6' plate glss, only a singe layer.
2) I've got an dditional door in the rear of the room. 36" centered on the 6' wall (right side of drawing). It opens out.
3) I've got an L-shaped desk that goes under the window and along the front (bottom of drawing and left side of drawing.
4) In the center of the right wall (top of drawing) in a 2'x4' window with an air ocnditioner stuck in it.
5) My computer monitor is in the corner (bottom left od drawing). It's huge - the Sony 24" trinitron. I had it along the short side of the desk but it's so deep that I had no room for keyboard. Plus, it's easier to control the computer and look into the practice room with it in the corner.
6) The other door opens the opposite direction - into the practice room (bottom of drawing)

I will take some exact measurements this weekend, but the room is approx 6 feet x 12 feet. The walls are just normal single layer sheetrock with 2x4 framing, insulated.

I ws planning on doing some DIY wall panels and bass traps like thos on John Risch's website http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/a.htm They are cheap enough that if they don't work I haven't lost much.

What I need is ideas for the ceiling. It's 8.5 feet.

For the ceiling you will probably just want to install one of those wall panels directly above the mix position.

That's what I was thinking DDev. We're going to build a bunch of the panels nd experiment with placement. Also thought about putting up a false ceiling that's not parallel to the floor.
 
OK, I did some inside measurements

5' 5.5"(w) x 11' 5.5"(l) x 8' 4.5"(h)

The L-shaped desk is 32" high if that matters. I'll try to get some pictures soon. I don't have enough room to do bass traps in the rear corners, but I could do them in all wall/ceiling corners. I also might be able to do some in the fron corners but they would not be floor to ceiling. Maybe just under the desk.
 
Since your width to length ratio is almost exactly double, I would recommend you follow the recommendations from the SAE plan as closely as possible. Sounds like that is your plan, so keep it going. You may wind up having to do some more broadband absorption on the back wall, though, if it seems that your mix position is getting a lot of bounce-back from the back wall.

As far as bass traps go, corners of any type are the best locations, whether they are side wall to back wall, or back wall to ceiling. For the area in front of the desk you might want to consider another of those wall panels to kill reflections if you are locating the desk fairly close to the wall. By spacing the wall panel a couple of inches or so from the front wall, you will also effectively lower the frequency of the absorption into the bass range.

Thanks Darryl. I'm trying to follow the guideline as best I can. I'm having considerable difficulty finding the 705-FRL (or 703) rigid fiberglass panels. Closest thing I can find is an Armstrong acoustic ceiling tile. I know it's not dense enough.

Would it be possible to use regular 8" fiberglass insulation and compress it to 2" somehow? Maybe use burlap on the front, then /75" poly batting, then the 8" insulation, then use "chicken wire" (the fencing with the hexagon holes) to compress it down?
 
update (turn it around)

Thanks to Mr. Sayers I've now got a nice pretty drawing of what we'd like to do. I've attached my drawing as well. Basically we're going to move the control room to the larger room nd use the smaller one for vocal/amp room with larger "live" room.
