I'm ready to pull my hair out..
No matter how I arrange the mic, I'm still getting crap through my headphones. I've tried every EQ setting I can get, and I get flabby bass that almost seems like speaker distortion. When I turn the gain (volume) up on the amplifier it gets even worse...I want to throw this damn tascam in the garbage. I've NEVER liked it.
I just can't get a good overdriven tone to record. The amplifier sounds wonderful when I'm standing in front of it - Loud, powerful. However I just can't manage to get it through the mic. Also, I have a hotplate attenuator reducing the volume of the amp by 12dbs.

Can ANYONE help me? :(

Try putting a mic where your ears like the sound, maybe a condenser. Mix that in with your close mic and see if it helps.
If it doesn't, sell that '57 twin for $20,000 and buy all new gear.

Maybe try different mics? Seems like I've heard that some people are not fans of e609s...
I've found it pretty tough to get mic'ed guitar tones I'm happy with. Always sounds better straight from the amp for some reason. And yeah, what Shawn said, if you have an extra channel, throw another mic in there and get some stereo going. There's loads of articles all over the net on how to mic amps, so spend a few hours digging around and see if you can soak up a few tips and tricks that can help...
Good luck!

You are probably over using the hotplate. Set the twin on 4 or less and try recording with less distortion than you think you need. If that doesn't work then the sound problem is probably the hotplate not the tascam.

try placing mic where your ears are.:p in other words, your ear(s) is not right up front of the grill, they are each oposite of each other and not pointing at the amp. this is why you are not hearing the exact same sound.

First of all, I'd like to thank you for the suggestions. I've actually ended up with the e609 about a foot and a half back and above the amp, but angled downward...so far this gives me the best tone I've been able to get. And after reading (over and over) that the mic should be 1-2" away from the speaker grill, I didn't try it where it is now. Oh well, live and learn. Hopefully I'll learn more as I read on. This seems like a very helpful, and polite forum.

Oh, and I wish I had a real '57 anything. But as a testimonial, this amp has balls for days, and good tone with a good tube swap. I HAD to get rid of those GTs Fender had in it.

Again, thanks :)
