Here's six mics with two sets of clips. Clips are numbered and the clips with lc in the name have a bit of bottom compression.

mics are

57
57 w/o xformer
atm650
e609S
i5
atm25

I pointed each mic directly at the center of the same Greenback speaker, reamped the same clip and used a ruler laid across the speaker for the distance (See pic). No claim that this is a nat's ass measurement and I realize the diaphragms are not all the same distance due to the mic housing. but this allowed the setup to be very repeatable.

For what it is worth:(listening over computer speakers)

336 was my favorite, seemed clear with good balance
337 smaller sounding, not as clear
338 would not load
339 muted sounding, but better than 337
340 would not load
341 thinner, not as ballsy as 336, but was my second favorite.

thanks for checking. I'm not sure about 340, it's loads here.

care to guess the mics.

My recommendation to get a really good feel for the tonal differences, is to load the set of six into your DAW and loop a small selected section over and over, then switch to another clip of the same section. the differences jump out.

You are right.
I hate to listen seriously on anything other than my studio speakers, because I am so familiar with them.
But, as an aside, ultimately the songs may be heard over crappy speakers, so how they translate on crap is at least significant to certain extent.

I honestly have no idea which mic is which. I will be patient until you reveal all.
I could almost venture a guess that 336 is one of the SM57 variety, because it sounds more like what I hear in my studio recordings.
