5400 rpm are enought to record 8 tracks? PLEASE URGENT!!!

hi,i have logic running on a mac book pro with inside a 7200 rpm drive, i bought a lacie rugged fw 400\800 interface,
my chain set up is computer , m audio 1814 and hard disk, sometime i have got some error, disk too slowly, or sample rate doen't match with your project (something like that) so i fed hard drive with an ownpower supply and i had the same error but rarely,
anyway my question is, can i record 8 tracks with aexternal 5400 rpm drive?
(probaly my m audio could be another weak ring)

It can depend on a few factors...not just the drive speed.

I still run nothing but SCSI drives (10k & 15k)...

A man of my own heart, I too use (and love) scsi's with a TASCAM MX-2424, recently did a live recording 24 tracks @44.1 24 bit 2 hours long continuous. No problems at all. I use scsi's for most multitrack recording.

However back to the question, I would think that the 5400rpm hard drive should do 8 tracks, but it could depend on the Sample and bit rate selected, don't forget that 24 bit files are larger than 16 bit files and 48k files are larger than 44.1k files. Your settings could be making a difference. You may need to run a test record 8 tracks and leave running for 1 hour see if it falls over.

I have found (during file transfer) that external drives powered from the Firewire/USB connection are much slower than external drives with on board power.

Did 16 tracks at 44.1 khz with a SATA 7200 rpm drive for over 3 hours no issues the recording chain was Yamaha O1V96 to RME fireface 800. Using Tracktion 2 with a Alesis HD24 for back up. Just in case It blue screened :p
All connections were optical fiber for inter connects between hardware.

Get an Sata drive and run it externally if you want., they make kits that fit int he PCI slot so you can send your sata ports out of the pc case.
 
I got a 4800RPM HD and USB1 so external drive is not option. It turns out that I got no problem to record 8 tracks @44.1/24bit. Someone did the math for me on another forum, and that's equivalent to a write speed of 1Mo/s, which every HD built the past 10 years can achieve.
