OMG!
My 5150.. it will sometimes cut out. The volume will drop substantially. If I hit it in the right place, it will come back up to volume. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I got new tubes in it about a year and a half ago because of this problem. It still does it, just not as often. I've opened it up and nothing is blatantly loose.

Any ideas? I really can't afford to take it to a shop right now. Whenever I can, I might take it there.

Let me know when you figure out the problem. The guitarist in my band is having the same problem with his 5150. Fortunately he has a 5150 II and a Marshall Artist, so its not a big deal, but still a pain in the ass.

This is usually a connection problem, either in a tube or a cold solder joint. A cold solder joint is more likely.

Do both channels do this or only one?

If only one channel, then it's in that preamp channel.

If both channels, then it's in the output stage common to both.

Does it only do this after playing for some time (amp has heated up)?

FWIW: Hitting your amp is not helping your tubes.
