What Pro Tools *****?
Ok, I think this is my final mix, but I am not sure. If you guys could give it a listen and please let me know if I am overlooking anything. I am way too close to this and am sick of hearing it! Thanks in advance!

Recorded with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 through a Soundblaster Live! Card. Drums courtesy of Beta Monkey Drum Loops. SM-58 mic'd 60s Blackface Twin, Strat, SG, Original TS-808 tube screamer, vox wah, SM-58 recorded vocals and direct in P-Bass.

Oh my lord! It posted!!! YEEHA! I have been trying for 3 days to create a new thread here. Whoa! Anyways, please listen and thanks to RAYC who already replied to this in my Halo 2 song thread.

I just updated the link with a new mixed version. Enjoy and please let me know what I should change. Thanks!

Nice job recording through Soundblaster Card. Im myself recording on audigy card, and as far didnt get such nice results;)

As for the mix, isn't the drums too much covered by guitars?

cool song man...here are some observations:

drums & bass need to come up...

guitars need to come down a smidge IMO...

vox need some automation...some parts are a little buried in the mix

I think the mix is WAAYYY too squashed by your mastering job

there seems to be some bad hiss in the recording...might be your soundcard

I think it's a pretty good mix considering the gear you are working on...

good luck man...I enjoyed the tune very much. :D

Thanks for the input from everyone so far. I'll work on bringing the drums and bass up and the guitars down. When I mix I tend to have the guitars too loud, I just want it to be in your face but maybe it's too much. Not too sure what to do about the uneven vocals. I am having a issue with that. Maybe I'll re-record them.

BTW -- Here's the original mix before I butchered it in Wavelab EQ'ing it:

Are you saying the re-EQ'd Wavelab version is better? Worse?

Thanks for the input!

Man, it definately does sound like you have some overcompression going on... Especially when you start getting a bit louder on the vocals, everything seems to get squashed and almost all the low end seems to disapear...

I compressed it with the compression EQ in Wavelab in the "remastered" version. I guess I will not do that anymore! :)

It's a bloody good song.
The compression issue is an ongoing sore for most people who don't have it down pat (most people in other words).
The compression does give it a attractive LoFiness though.

Hey, lo-fi is good! Right? I'll probably give all these tracks in raw .wav format and let a professional master the whole deal. This was just my attempt at messing it up!

cool tune man and nice job getting it down. i like the unmastered version more. i really like the vocals and guitar.

Thanks for all the advice that everyone has given! Now, if I can get my singer over here maybe we can re-record those vox!

Great song, thanks for posting it.

Here's what I think -

There is a drum fill - part of the verse - that plays repeatedly that just throws the groove right off. I think it's like a a snare hit and then a triplet and then another snare hit. Simplify the drums a little on those spots, and it will flow perfectly. Try to get a crash cymbal across the transition from hi hat to ride cymbal.

Vocals could be louder.
