Ya heard meh.

I just sold my AKG C1000's and got 260$ on ebay for them, and I just tracked a metal band and got another 250$. This is all going towards the purchase of a new vocal mic (I was using the C1000, EEEEK!) and new overheads (also using the C1000's).

I know the prospective hopefuls (Studio projects b1 b3 c1 c4's, AT 40 series, and some RODE mics) are all talked about on this board often.

I was just wondering what ya'll might recommend for someone that records mainly hard music (metal, hardcore, punk, death/gothic metal) so I need some overheads that pick up the kit and represent it better than the C1000's, perhaps something that makes the toms/snare/kick stand out a little more and gives it more punch. And I also need a condenser mic for vocals that can handle screaming/yelling/high SPL stuff (as well as soft singing w/ melody) that will sit comfortably in a mix.

I've been considering 2 c4's and a C1, 2 C1's, 2 AT4040's or 4033's, 2 AT3035's, 2 M-audio luna mics, and various other mixtures, but of course, I wanted to run this by you guys first, since most of you know more about this stuff than me!

Please try to let me know which works best with the type of music I record, thanks!

Somehow, that whole "2 AT4040's" thing kinda' has a nice ring to it.

Add $50 to your budget and see if you can do some haggling/price matching down at GC:

$450 for a Rode NTK
$100 for a pair of Oktava MC012s

I already considered 319's and another MC12 for the overheads. But I've heard too many horror stories about poor quality control, shitty customer service, 25% of the mics being crap.....

I just don't want to deal with sitting down and having to test out multiple mics to see which ones are bad, is it me, or is that a bad sign for a company?

I’ve bought 10 of these mics and none of them were crap. They were just inconsistent in output level. The matching that you have to do with these mics is worth it. There’s no better value in a SDC in that price range, IMHO.

If you don't like the idea of getting the Oktavas, your idea of getting two 4033s is probably sound.

You might also look into a good dynamic for screaming vocals. I know that Fred Durst (ugh, I know) uses a SM7 for vocals. And he definitely screams a lot (when he's not whining, or trying to rap.) I've never used this mic, but its been recommended for screamers.

Just something else to consider.

Get an SM7 for vocals, and a pair of 603's for OH's.

Spend the rest on a pack of gum.

1 pair of rode nt5s. they are darker (less annoyingly bright is probobly a better way of putting it) than the c1000s. you shoud be able to push the level a bit more to bring out the toms.

SP c1. it will handle screamers. get a pop filter.

Russ @ home studio musician is going to hook me up with 2 Studio Project C1's and an M-audio Luna, ohh man am i gonna have a fun weekend!

C1s as overheads? I'm telling you, you should have given the Oktavas a chance.

I agree that the Oktava MC012's are perfect for the material you are doing. For a screamer mic, I like something dark and smooth. My 2 favorites for this are AKG Solidtube and Oktava ML52 ribbon. You could do all three Oktavas for $300, with $200 left over to play with, maybe a better dynamic. Used MD421's are in that range.-Richie

Yeah, C1's as overheads.

I'm gonna try them out first and see how i like em', if they aren't what i'm looking for, i'll auction them off on ebay and search for some other ones.

I think they'll sound great, definately better than the C1000's!!
