If you were to set up a home DAW to record real good sounds then mix in 5.1 and play back how would you do it.

What equipment would you use, and how would you set it up?

Just a Q?

You have to give an idea of the budget or this is going to get out of control :D

Lets say $1000.00 to $1500.00 (no joke I have the money) maybe more

i'm sorry to say man, but 1500 dollars isn't that much really. to record 'real good sounds' you are gonna need a lot more...

lets have a basic setup...

samplitude producer 7 (multitrack software with 5.1 mixing capability) 700 or 800 dollars (assuming you go legal)

soundcard with enough ins and outs- remeber, 5.1 is six channels so that is a minimum of 6 outs... m-audio delta 1010 should work here. 24 bit, 96khz... no complaints there. set for DVD-Audio quality. 600 dollars

then monitors... now, you will need 5 speakers and a sub. let's say you go for some nice mackies. HR824's. 5 of those and mackie sub. 500 (approx) per speaker plus HRS120 sub at 1,250 bucks... 3750 dollars (approx)

that totals you at around 5050 dollars... JUST for the ability to dump the tracks on your com and play them back to all the relative speakers. this is also assuming that you already have nice mics and preamps to capture your "real good sounds" before they even get onto your com. and then, to preserve the 5.1 surround you will need to mix down to DVD-Audio which will require a DVD burner...

sorry to burst your bubble bro but it is gonna cost a little more that 1500 dollars. this is an expensive hobby.

The Cost is what I needed to know so that I can ask for more.

I have an Investor.

an investor eh? niiiice... but get some more opinions before making a decision :D

shit. then the price will climb like a bitch.

do you already have a computer that you intend to use? please post the specs...

also, what kind of stuff will you be recording?

lucid... If you are really a white boy in DUBAI then you should loan this lost soul some money. Dubai doesn't exactly have the reputation for being full of starving people.

Now GraFx dude... I understand fully your fool-hearted naivity in thinking that you can just post a question about 5.1 surround and somene will give you a step by step buyer's guide and have it all come under $1,500 or so.

Not gonna happen. Here is a BASIC... and I do mean BASIC scenerio...

1x PC (Pent IV 2.4gHz, 1GB DDR-RAM, 2x 120GB 7200rpm Hard Drives, CD/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD burning ROM)... or Apple Mac G4 dual 1.25gHz, 1.5GB DDR-RAM, 2x 120GB HDD, SuperDrive (DVD burner).
Costs... PC: $2,600 Mac: $3,400

Software...
For Mac: Logic Audio Platinum v. 5.5 or Digital Performer 3
For PC: Steinberg's Nuendo or Cubase SX
Cost: avg. $800

Monitors: 3x Mackie HR824... cost: $1,750
Monitors: 2x Mackie HR624... cost: $950
Monitors: 1x Mackie Sub Woofer... $900

Sound card w/ at least 6 outs...
Delta 1010... cost: $800

Mixer w/ pre-amps for recording...
Mackie 1402 compact mixer... cost: $550

Microphones...
Jesus... the sky is the limit. For "real good sounds" you would have to be MUCH more specific and go do that in the microphones forum.

Now this is without the first sound module, synth, or MIDI keyboard. No samplers, no hardware control surface (meaning that you will be having to do everything with the mouse).

Your total cost for this EXTREMELY basic set up comes to...
PC route: $8,350
Mac route: $9,150

And this is all before you have bought the first microphone, instrument, sound module, keyboard... not to mention that the room you need to mix in propper surround sound has to be treated with a couple thousand dollars worth of renovations... otherwise it is a pointless undertaking. Then you have to add on at least a year and a hlaf to learn how to use all these new toys...

Jesus man... I hope your "investor" is a nice person. :D

pices... if i had money to load i would buy gear :D yeah, dubai has a fuckload of money, but being white means expat, and the richness comes from the locals. some scaraly (even a word) rich people here...
