I have an MK 488 II and I really don't know what the hell I am doing.

Basically, I busted my headphones for the zillionith time last week. You know how it is on a bad take, something has to pay the ultimate price for my mistakes. So I went out and bought some alesis monitors.

So I get them today and got to hook them up, I figured it was easy, but of course nothing is that easy. So do I need some kind of power amp or something like that?

Any ideas on what I need and of course I am on a limited budget. SO how much should I plan on spending?

Thanking you in advance.

Unless you bought yourself powered (also called "active") monitors, you will definitely need a power amp to drive them.

Also... I'm not sure what you were doing to blow your cans, but blowing up monitors is just as easy (except a lot more expensive). Nearfields are not designed for PA-level tracking!!! Watch your levels!!!!! ;)

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

I figured I needed a power amp. Now I will search for one.

Per my headphones, they didn't blow up. I threw them across the room, it happens from time to time.

Like nobody else has ever done this!

Same thing... you DON'T wanna be throwing the monitors! (unless they're Yamaha NS-10s.............) :D

Yo, fita;
I, too, have a 488 MkII and was able to find a stereo amp (with the added bonus of AM/FM receiver ;>D )at a garage sale for $2 that works great. I would like to suggest you look in your local garage sales, Goodwill & Salvation Army stores for something like this. Hey, even if it blows out after a few weeks (or days even), the cost will have been relatively cheap! I hope this has been of help to you.

Thanks Chipper

So I dismantled the family stereo?

In a pinch this works, I even hooked the graphic eqaulizer from this puppy.

After fooling with the connections, I think I got it right. So hopefully the amp won't blow until I get the proper power amp.

Chipper how's about dropping me a clue on your connections.

Thanks,

Hookups

Here's how I hooked mine up...follow the bouncing ball.

To get monitors to work:
From my 448, monitor out into power amp (Tape 1, P.B.)

To hear a Tape in my mixing console:
From Amp (Rec out) to Mixing console (line in) then (line out) into 2tr input in 488

Also, I used the EQ, who knows if this puppy works:
EQ (line in) into Amp (Rec out). Eq (line out)into Amp (p.b.)

I know it's whacky, but until I get some cashola, this is it.

I haven't dumped anything down yet, so until I do, I guess it's a go.

Thanks for any input!

Hi, fita;
Here's how i hooked up my 488 MkII:

1. From monitor out on my 488 to the input on my amp.

2. From the speaker outputs on the amp, I put a "Y" splitter on each channel and ran one to my speakers, and the other to the cassette recorder I use to make masters. That way, I can listen to tracks after I record them and then later hear them as I make a master tape.

I'm not sure if I'm being clear, but I'm sure you understand what I mean. Anyway, I hope this has been of help to you.

Yo Fita-man: [he who throws fits}

The Yamaha AX 592 integrated amplifier will save you many plug it in and unplug it tantrums.

I still use this gear with my MD-8 but used it with two 488's at an earlier time of my recording learning curve.

This "integrated" amp will host TWO SETS OF SPEAKERS, AND YOU CAN SWITCH ONE PAIR ON, TWO PAIR ON, BOTH PAIR OFF, with the flick of you finger.

This amp will support: CD, two tape decks, phono, and has an AUX for DAT if you want it.

It has a "pure through" switch so you can mix down "just as it is on tape/or whatever; with this switch disabled, you get a slight coloration or you may putz with the amps bass, treble, and the amp also has a "flat" switch for clearing up the sound. It's a piece of work.

So, save your pezzutos and buy one; until then, you can get buy like we all did or do.

As Bruce says, don't start flinging your speakers around.
