407 is probably optimum if you want your meters to read 0 VU at the designated flux. The 22-2 was designed for use with a wide range of tape, specifically marketed to home recordists using readily available hi-fi tape, at the time found at most stores including Radio Shack and K-Mart. Thus the flux level is around 200 nWb/m the same as commonly found on a hi-fi unit, rather than the 250 nWb/m of the 32.
The recommended tape was Ampex 407, Maxell 35-90 and 35-90B, TDK Audua… even Radio Shack “Studio Quality Tape” will work.
With 457 you can push the levels to your heart’s content. You can also calibrate the unit to 250 nWb/m as I did mine. I still use 407 though.
