Thanx so much for your advise chris, slack, chris...

Its ace how helpfull people are. I hope to use some of my 2 cents to help people out sometime, but as it is i'd probably only be of help to new newbies and guitarists, it may be quite a while before i can significantly help people.

wots your setup chris? (and slack and whoever else)

Hey Salvetem... if you can only be of help to newbies and guitarists at this point, then that is of great value to the newbies and guitarists, right? Head up, man.... everyone has something to offer. We're all grateful when someone, regardless of background can help out. That's one of the interesting things about the internet. Nobody knows you're 16 or 50 unless you tell them.

As far as my set-up goes.... it's actually quite modest, but I'm in the "learning how to use the tools the best I can" stage, so that I can be REALLY good when I can afford more and better gear! Here goes...

Mics:
Rode NT1 large diaphragm condensor
Shure SM 58 (plus a TOA mic which seems to be a total knock-off of SM58)

Mic Pre: Peavey TMP1 - check it out... nice little unit!
Behringer Composer Pro 2-channel expander/compressor/limiter (great little unit - particularly for the price!!)
Behringer MX802A Eurorack mixer (does the job quite nicely)

Cubase VST (24bit version) 5.1

Celeron 466 computer; 7200RPM Quantum Fireball HD, 384 megs RAM, Delta 44 soundcard (audio); D-MAN PCI soundcard (audio and midi)

Korg M1 keyboard

guitars, bass, amps....

Oh, yeah.... monitors!! I think this will be my next purchase, but in Canada, a half-way decent set of "bang for the buck" monitors (Yorkville YMP, Behringer Truth, etc.) are about $800 Canadian. I figure that's about a year or more away. In the meantime, I have an Aiwa home stereo that has pretty decent speakers (that I am getting to know the sound of pretty well) except they're a bit brittle on the top end, as my main monitors (amplified by the stereo itself, which is fed signal from the Delta 44 to the mixer to the stereo). I also have a couple of other sets of speakers hooked up (one pair I bought for $50 used that sound okay except they're a bit boomy and can sound a bit hollow, and another that are about 30 years old from a low-mid range system (even then) that are really heavy on the mid-range frequencies without a lot of top or bottom. This gives me three very different sounding sets of speakers - one of them rather good - to judge my mixes on... and headphones just for fun. Does the trick for now - until I can get a pair of serious monitors.

To draw a bit of a parallel to when I was sixteen.... I bought my first electric guitar... plugged it into the mic input of my ghetto blaster. Then I bought a Peavey practice amp, then a distortion pedal, then a much bigger and louder Peavey Stage amp, and then a couple more pedals, then I experimented with a rack system with a great power amp and a crap preamp running through a barely Okay speaker cabinet, then sold rack system in favour of another amp - a 150W head and 2x12 cabinet, then an effects processor, then another guitar, etc.

Hehe, then there was the two reel to reels, the $15 Radio Shack "mixer", and the 'Drumdrops' record.

... and the last of us finally realized that Beta machines weren't the way to go, and video stores finally stocked movies only in VHS....:D

Okay...So I am in your boat right now man...I started with a new soundcard for my comp. and got a mixer...I am just using my home stereo and normal speakers for now..And its good enuff to get some enjoyment and make tracks and what not...(Ofcourse I have a mic and all that setup already) I am now just upgrading piece by piece...Getting some Active Monitors next, and then a mic pre and so on and so on...My advice to you is to grab a little mixer to start like stated above...And monitors if you can afford them...But get shit that will last so you don't have to go thru this ordeal every few years...Have fun, go into your local store and talk to the guys...Like this board most are very happy to help you out and teach you some stuff...
