I have a question. I just recently got a 424mkIII. If I want to record 3 or 4 acoustic instruments at the same time is it better to go with the direct function or the buss L/R function for each channel? I also want to go back and overdud or add other instruments.

if u r gonna keep all the instruments on seperate tracks, then you better use the direct function...if you use the the busses, everything on say the left side will go to a track and everything on the right will go to a track...and then you cant seperate them....

you can use the Buss positions and still confine your signals to single channels (say that fast 3X) by panning hard L and R. But, there's really no point in doing that in what you described. Take Edgar's advice and use Direct-there's no difference and you'll encounter less headaches, probably. Use the Buss positions when you want to route a signal to a different channel or if you want it spread over more than one.

thanks edgar and vurt. after playing around with this unit I found that direct seems to be the best route to take. i'm slowly learning all the tricks to this unit. records real well. so far my upgrade has been a success.
