424Mk3 channel query

I have a 424mk 3, but am at a loss to understand how and why to use channels 5 & 6. I have the manual, but some personal help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Channels 1, 2, 3, 4 will be recorded on their separate tracks 1, 2, 3, 4 in mono and can be mixed and played with totally independent of each other. Using channels 5 and 6 would yield you additional signal input to be mixed with the other channels. Scenario one: You're recording a live band and need as many inputs as possible and so you use all 6 channel strips but only 4 of them (1, 2, 3, 4) will be separated and channels 5 and 6 will have to be live mixed to any one or combo of the first 4. Scenario two: You want to use 5 or 6 mics on the drums 'cause you feel 4 or less is undesirable. What you do is mic the drums using all 5 or 6 channel inputs with the same end result as in scenario one. Scenario three: You wish to record 6 or more backing singers live using dynamic mics and you think it'd be nice to have as many mic inputs as possible. The 424 will give you six, separately record each of 4 singers (with some bleed through of course depending on mic positioning) and you need to make some hard educated guessing to mix channels 5 and 6 (singers 5 and 6) to the other tracks 'cause you won't be able to undo what you pipe through on 5+6. There are literally dozens of other ways to work with the extra channels. Basically, the reason they're there is to give you more input. I hope I was clear 'cause I just got confused myself. :eek: :D

The other reason for having additional inputs on 4-tracks was to accommodate external sound modules &/or drum machines which were sync'd using MIDI. It meant you lost one track on tape (to record a sync signal) but gained other virtual MIDI tracks.
You could also use the extra inputs as effects returns.
