I have a 424 that I have used for a long time, but about 6 months ago the motor started to run a different speed. I have looked at it and believe that the motor and recording component could be exchanges. Does anyone know of someone who has a used 424 that has a good motor assembly in it, but it doesn't work otherwise.
Has anyone else had this problem and what have you done about it?

Have you replaced the belt, & made sure the belt is not slipping?

The capstan belt usually goes bad, probably more often than the motor. When the belt ages, it tends to slip, causing lots of speed related problems. The belt is a low cost item, and may be purchased from Tascam Parts, at (323)727-4840, or maybe source a generic belt at an electronics supply store.

Tascam has like a 400% markup on this type of belt, [capstan belt, $12 item] so it's preferrable to find one as generic, PRB belts, [$3 item].

424 running at different speed

Thank you for your response. No. I have not checked the belt and that sounds like a really good idea.
I am wondering if a worn belt would cause it to just vary in speed.
The symptom that I am faced with is that it seems to run at the same speed for maybe an hour and then run at a different speed for a time and then at a different speed. I can seem to adjust by using the speed control up to a point. The other sympton that has occured is that the capstan just won't turn until I apply some outside force to it. Then it might run for two or three sessions. I have it torn down now because the frustration of trying to use it is causing me too much grief. I hope this makes sense.
I definately do appreciate your input. Thanks again.
