I've got kind of a strange question. I apologize in advance for my
very basic understanding of my own equipment.

I've been using my TASCAM 424 MkII for a few years now to record live
spoken word performances. What I've been doing is using a splitter to
grab the signal from the house mic and putting it into channel one on
the TASCAM, and then using a pair of microphones for audience reaction
into channels two and three. Then I mix it down into my computer sound card using the line out output. This has always worked fine for what I want to do.

Last weekend, something went haywire with my splitter...I had some
phantom buzzing noise on it, and it was pretty much unusable. I worked
quickly and came up with a plan B where I found a tape out on the house
board and used a spare set of RCA cables to take that output into the
"sub input" on the TASCAM. It appeared to put the microphone input
onto channels 3 and 4. Excellent. I used a friend's Sennheiser
cardoid condenser to get the audience, and I put this on channel 2.

Everything worked, but I'm not sure how! The TASCAM manual isn't much
help.

Here are my questions:

1. It seems that the sub input is controlled by the main volume
slider. Is this true?

2. When I had things set up this way, it appeared that by fiddling
with the trim control on channel 2 actually seemed to affect the input
on 3 and 4, though I don't see how or why this would be.

3. Theoretically, could I have 4 XLR inputs as well as the sub-input?

4. It seems that as I'm mixing down that the stuff on all 3 channels
isn't as adjustable (if that makes sense) as it has been under my other
setup.

So there it is. If anyone knows a lot about the TASCAM, outdated
though it may be, I'd really appreciate some input. Like I said,
everything seems to have worked, but I'm not sure how. I've just been teaching myself how to use my stuff, but this has me confused.

Thanks in advance for any replies or emails!
