Don't stare at the eye.
Some of you may remember that I won 3 old MD-421 U-5 on eBay a while back. They were in unknown condition, so they could've all been broken. But 2 out of 3 work perfectly.

Anyway, someone here is selling one down in the classified, and he mentions something about the 5 pos eq dial not working perfectly. And I said to myself, "Self, what 5 pos eq dial is he talking about?"

Then I looked. Yep. Mine have 5 pos eq dials. It's like getting something new all over again. I'm stoked to see what difference it makes...

Yup, they are there. Although I just leave mine flat just like with the switches on the SM7. YMMV of course.

I likely will too. The problem (or fun) is this: I've already recorded with them, not knowing they were there. Then when I found they were there I moved 'em without noticing where they started. So now I've got to record and find the best settings--which may turn out better than the initial test.

Well, I don't know about on a 421, but interestingly enough, I do use the midrange presence boost on the SM7, but only when I use it as a *live* vocal mic. In the studio. I keep it flat. I think it has similar applications for live radio broadcast, where you're trying to cut through a lot of background noise. Since I first tried it as an experiment, the SM7 has become my go-to live vocal mic.-Richie

sweet -- I picked up a couple of 421s a few weeks ago, but haven't used them yet - you probably just saved me some trouble :D

I remember when you got those mikes. Seems to me they looked kinda rough too.
Pretty cool about the switch thing. Makes ya want to play with em all over again, huh?

When you said "5 pos eq dial" I thought you referring to it being a piece of shit dial....

I know nothing about the 421's.

obviously....:D

Yeah, I should've clarified: 5 position eq dial. :D

Yeah, I remember you getting those mics too...and your "wanking" to test them was better than my playing on a good day! :D

Congrats on your new (again) toys!
