414 low volume playback

I recently got a tascam 414, testing it out i recorded my guitar amp, via mic onto track one, but when i tried to play it back it was almost silent. I had to max out the monitor volume just to confirm that there was noise. The machine is virtually new, however I am using a Maxwell 120 Type I normal bias cassette. According to the manual this is not an ideal tape and I am planning on getting High bias Type II (per manual request). If not the cassette, what could the problem be?

Is there a mix knob? If so maybe it is too much on the direct side.

if it helps identify the problem: the level display on track one showed peaks upto the +6dB mark during playback

problem solved, i needed to switch the input for track one from mic to tape. feel like an idiot. thanks anyway
